The Morocco-manufactured WhAP displayed at Marrakech featured the UT30 MkII, a remotely operated combat turret designed to provide armoured vehicles with enhanced firepower while maintaining crew protection.

The turret incorporates a 30 mm automatic cannon, a coaxial machine gun and advanced electro-optical targeting equipment. Its stabilised weapon system supports target engagement while the host vehicle is stationary or moving, providing greater operational flexibility for mechanised infantry formations.

Unlike conventional manned turrets, unmanned weapon stations allow operators to remain inside the vehicle’s protected compartment. This configuration can reduce crew exposure to direct enemy fire while improving the use of internal vehicle space.

The integration demonstrates the modular nature of the WhAP platform, which was designed to accommodate different weapon systems according to customer requirements. The original Indian platform supports both manned and unmanned turret configurations, allowing it to fulfil several battlefield roles.

Although exhibition reporting identifies the displayed turret as the UT30 MkII, Tata Advanced Systems has not publicly confirmed that this particular configuration has entered serial production or received a separate procurement order.

DRDO and Tata Advanced Systems Develop a Versatile 8×8 Armoured Platform

The WhAP 8×8 represents an important achievement in India’s indigenous armoured vehicle development programme. DRDO and Tata Advanced Systems jointly designed the platform to provide a combination of mobility, protection, firepower and mission adaptability.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the vehicle incorporates a survivable monocoque hull with scalable ballistic and mine protection. Its independent suspension, central tyre inflation system and high-power engine support mobility across varied terrain and operational environments.

The platform’s eight-wheel-drive configuration provides mobility advantages for mechanised formations operating over roads, semi-prepared surfaces and difficult terrain. Its design also supports the integration of mission-specific equipment without requiring an entirely new vehicle architecture.

The WhAP can be configured as an infantry fighting vehicle, armoured personnel carrier, reconnaissance vehicle, command post, mortar carrier or ambulance. Additional weapon options include remote weapon stations and anti-tank guided missile systems.

This flexibility allows military customers to standardise multiple operational roles around a common vehicle family, potentially simplifying training, maintenance and spare-parts management.

Morocco’s Tata Defence Manufacturing Facility Begins Delivering WhAP Vehicles

A major milestone in the India-Morocco defence relationship occurred on September 23, 2025, when Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Moroccan Defence Minister Abdeltif Loudiyi jointly inaugurated Tata Advanced Systems’ manufacturing facility in Berrechid.

The facility covers approximately 20,000 square metres and manufactures the Indian-developed WhAP 8×8 for the Royal Moroccan Army.

The Ministry of Defence described it as Morocco’s largest defence manufacturing facility and the first such plant established by an Indian private company in Africa. Construction and preparations progressed ahead of schedule, allowing production to begin three months earlier than originally planned.

The factory represents a departure from conventional equipment exports in which completed vehicles are shipped directly from the supplier’s home country. Instead, Tata Advanced Systems has established an overseas production base that brings Indian vehicle technology and manufacturing expertise into Morocco’s domestic defence industrial ecosystem.

The programme achieved another milestone on December 24, 2025, when Tata Advanced Systems announced the handover of the first batch of Morocco-manufactured WhAP 8×8 vehicles to the Royal Moroccan Army.

The delivery demonstrated that the bilateral manufacturing arrangement had progressed beyond facility establishment into the supply of operational military platforms.

Moroccan Industry Prepares to Manufacture Turrets for Tata Armoured Vehicles

The development of the WhAP programme is also encouraging local production of advanced armoured vehicle weapon systems in Morocco.

On October 8, 2026, Moroccan Military Industry (MMI) General Manager Kaduri Naor told Reuters that his company had reached an agreement with Morocco’s defence administration to manufacture turrets for Tata 8×8 armoured vehicles assembled in the country.

MMI, which is associated with Israel’s Elbit Systems, operates a weapons manufacturing facility in the Midparc industrial zone near Casablanca. The company plans to begin delivering armoured vehicle turrets to the Moroccan military in March 2027.

The programme covers turret production and associated ammunition, contributing to Morocco’s efforts to establish domestic capabilities in military vehicle integration and combat systems manufacturing.

MMI is also developing a specialised counter-drone turret configuration. According to the company’s management, the system will employ ammunition designed to disperse tungsten fragments against approaching aerial targets, with a radar-based mechanism supporting threat detection and engagement.

This counter-drone development is distinct from the conventional 30 mm turret configuration displayed on the WhAP at Marrakech.

The planned production of turrets in Morocco suggests that the country’s armoured vehicle manufacturing programme is expanding from vehicle assembly towards a broader industrial ecosystem involving weapon systems, ammunition and specialised combat technologies.

UT30 MkII Turret Adds Advanced Firepower to the WhAP Platform

The UT30 MkII is an unmanned turret developed by Elbit Systems for integration with modern armoured fighting vehicles. Its modular architecture supports various combat vehicle designs and operational requirements.

The system’s principal armament is a 30 mm automatic cannon intended for engaging lightly armoured vehicles and other suitable battlefield targets. A coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun provides an additional weapon option for engagements where the main cannon is unnecessary.

The turret can also support anti-tank guided missile integration, depending on the selected configuration. This allows vehicle operators to combine automatic cannon fire with longer-range anti-armour capabilities.

Its integrated electro-optical fire-control system incorporates stabilised observation and targeting equipment, assisting operators in detecting, identifying and tracking potential threats.

The unmanned configuration contributes to crew survivability by keeping the weapon operators within the protected hull. It also reduces the internal space required for a conventional turret basket, an advantage for vehicles designed to transport infantry personnel.

For the WhAP, the demonstrated integration illustrates how an Indian-designed chassis can accommodate internationally developed combat systems without fundamentally altering the vehicle’s underlying architecture.

India-Morocco Defence Cooperation Supports Local Manufacturing and Technology Transfer

The expansion of Tata’s Moroccan manufacturing operations is taking place within a broader bilateral defence partnership.

On September 22, 2025, India and Morocco signed a Memorandum of Understanding on defence cooperation during Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit to Rabat. The agreement established an institutional framework for cooperation in defence manufacturing, military training, joint exercises and capacity building.

The following day’s inauguration of the Berrechid facility gave this partnership a major industrial component. The plant was designed not only to supply the Royal Moroccan Army but also to develop local engineering expertise and support an expanding network of component manufacturers and technical service providers.

According to the Indian Ministry of Defence, approximately one-third of the components and subsystems were expected to be sourced and assembled locally from the beginning, with the proportion of local value addition targeted to increase to 50% over the following years.

This arrangement combines Indian vehicle design and manufacturing expertise with Morocco’s objective of strengthening its domestic defence industry. It also provides Tata Advanced Systems with a production presence closer to potential customers in Africa and Europe.

The emerging cooperation in turret manufacturing adds another dimension to this industrial partnership, bringing vehicle production and combat system integration within the same regional manufacturing ecosystem.

Morocco Facility Expands India’s Defence Manufacturing Presence in Africa

Tata Advanced Systems’ overseas manufacturing programme represents an important development in the international expansion of India’s private defence industry.

Traditional defence exports involve supplying equipment manufactured domestically. The Moroccan programme introduces a broader model in which Indian-developed technology supports manufacturing, industrial employment and technical capabilities within a partner country.

During the September 2025 inauguration, Rajnath Singh described the facility as an example of India’s approach to combining self-reliance with international cooperation. He emphasised that Aatmanirbhar Bharat also seeks to make India a dependable source of advanced technology and high-quality products for international partners.

The Moroccan facility reflects the government’s wider approach of Make in India, Make with Friends and Make for the World. It demonstrates how indigenous defence technologies can support overseas production partnerships while retaining their foundations in Indian research and engineering.

Morocco’s geographic position offers additional advantages. Its proximity to European markets and established industrial connections across Africa provide opportunities for future defence manufacturing collaboration and international sales.

The facility’s intended role as a potential export hub was also highlighted by the Indian Ministry of Defence during its inauguration.

Tata WhAP Demonstrates the Export Potential of Indian Armoured Vehicle Technology

The appearance of the WhAP 8×8 with an advanced unmanned turret at Marrakech highlights the platform’s ability to evolve beyond its original armoured personnel carrier configuration.

The vehicle combines an Indian-developed chassis with modular protection, mobility and weapon integration capabilities. Its adaptable design allows military customers to select different combat systems while retaining the fundamental advantages of a common armoured vehicle platform.

The participation of Moroccan industry in vehicle manufacturing, alongside emerging plans for local turret production, reflects a growing international industrial network around the WhAP.

Although the displayed UT30 MkII configuration has not been publicly confirmed as a new serial-production standard, it demonstrates a technically significant direction for the platform. The integration of an advanced 30 mm combat turret expands the range of operational roles available to potential customers.

The WhAP programme illustrates India’s transition from supplying defence equipment to establishing international manufacturing partnerships built around indigenous technologies. With production underway in Morocco and opportunities emerging for combat system integration, the DRDO-Tata platform strengthens India’s presence in the global armoured vehicle industry while supporting a deeper and more productive India-Morocco defence relationship.
