India’s private space industry is beginning to move from technology demonstration towards commercial scale, with domestic startups outlining plans ranging from monthly rocket launches and satellite refuelling to orbital debris removal, space-based pharmaceutical manufacturing and satellite services for agriculture.
The ambitions emerged from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s interaction with founders and chief executives of 20 Indian space startups. The meeting took place on August 21, 2026, while a detailed transcript of the interaction was released on August 23 as India marked National Space Day. Participating companies included Skyroot Aerospace, Agnikul Cosmos, Pixxel, Dhruva Space, Bellatrix Aerospace, Digantara, Manastu Space, OrbitAID Aerospace and several other emerging space companies.
One of the clearest indications of the sector’s transition towards scale came from Skyroot Aerospace. Following the successful July 18 orbital launch of its Vikram-1 rocket, the company told the Prime Minister that it is targeting one launch every month by the middle of 2027. Skyroot said it has already established three factories with capacity to manufacture one rocket per month, while its longer-term ambition is to progress towards weekly launches and eventually much higher launch frequencies.
The July mission was particularly significant because Vikram-1 became the first privately developed Indian launch vehicle to achieve an orbital mission from Indian soil. Its success provided a major demonstration of the capabilities being built by India’s emerging commercial launch industry.
Commercial interest is also beginning to follow technological success. During the interaction, one startup representative said the company had secured eight launch contracts within a month of a successful launch, with most of those contracts coming from international customers. The published transcript does not clearly identify the company making that particular statement, so attributing the eight contracts to Skyroot would go beyond the official record.
India’s private-space ambitions are meanwhile expanding well beyond launch vehicles. Entrepreneurs described plans for a global ground-station network, while another company highlighted propulsion systems that allow satellites to manoeuvre and remain operational in orbit for years. A startup developing robotic spacecraft said its technology is intended to physically capture defunct satellites and remove them from orbit, addressing the growing problem of space debris.
Indian companies are also moving into in-orbit servicing and logistics. One startup told Modi that it is developing docking and refuelling technologies with the longer-term objective of creating what amounts to a fuel station in space. Such technology could allow satellites to extend their operational lives instead of becoming unusable once their onboard propellant is exhausted.
Another emerging field is space pharmaceutical manufacturing. An Indian startup described plans to build satellites capable of carrying pharmaceutical-production processes into orbit and returning manufactured products to Earth. Microgravity can produce physical and biological conditions unavailable in conventional terrestrial laboratories, creating potential opportunities for specialised pharmaceutical research and manufacturing.
The commercial space ecosystem is also reaching into agriculture and climate services. One entrepreneur said an innovation was being prepared for deployment involving one million farmers, while other participating companies are developing satellite-based intelligence, hyperlocal weather services and agricultural applications. Modi encouraged space companies working in agriculture to collaborate with universities and government departments so that satellite-derived information can help farmers make better decisions and improve output.
The transformation follows the opening of India’s space sector to greater private participation and the creation of a regulatory and promotional framework around IN-SPACe. Startups that initially concentrated on proving individual technologies are increasingly moving towards manufacturing capacity, regular launches, exports and recurring commercial services.
Modi said India’s combination of engineering talent, cost competitiveness and entrepreneurial risk-taking could help the country establish itself rapidly in the international space market. He also called for an ecosystem capable of attracting global companies and skilled professionals to build their space ventures in India.
The range of technologies now under development suggests that India’s private space sector is entering a broader phase than simply producing rockets and satellites. Launch services, propulsion, orbital logistics, debris removal, refuelling, space manufacturing, ground infrastructure and agricultural intelligence are emerging simultaneously, giving India the foundations of a more complete commercial space ecosystem.
