India, US and UAE Discuss Energy and Connectivity in Trilateral Meeting in Mumbai

Following the meeting, Jaishankar described the interaction as a useful exchange of perspectives. Energy and connectivity formed the central focus of the engagement, reflecting their importance to regional economic development and international commercial relations.

India, the United States and the United Arab Emirates have strengthened their diplomatic engagement through a trilateral meeting focused on energy security and regional connectivity. The discussions brought together the foreign ministers of three important economic and strategic partners, reflecting their shared interest in strengthening cooperation across interconnected regional markets.

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar hosted UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Mumbai on 20 October 2026.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the three countries to exchange perspectives on energy and connectivity at a time when regional developments, changing trade patterns and energy security concerns are influencing international economic cooperation.

India Hosts Trilateral Discussions on Energy and Connectivity

The Mumbai meeting brought together senior diplomatic representatives from India, the United States and the UAE to discuss opportunities for cooperation in energy and connectivity.

Following the meeting, Jaishankar described the interaction as a useful exchange of perspectives. Energy and connectivity formed the central focus of the engagement, reflecting their importance to regional economic development and international commercial relations.

India maintains extensive economic and strategic relationships with both countries. The United States is an important partner in advanced technologies, investment, defence and energy, while the UAE plays a significant role in India’s energy supplies, trade, investment and commercial connections with West Asia.

The trilateral engagement offers an additional platform for discussing areas where the interests of all three countries intersect.

Energy Security Remains a Major Area of Cooperation

Energy security has become an increasingly important component of India’s diplomatic and economic relationships. The country’s expanding industrial sector, transportation network and digital economy require dependable access to energy resources and infrastructure.

The UAE is an established energy partner for India, particularly in the petroleum sector. The United States also maintains substantial energy and technology cooperation with India, alongside expanding engagement in other strategic industries.

Cooperation among the three countries offers opportunities to exchange perspectives on energy markets, supply-chain resilience and infrastructure development.

The discussions in Mumbai highlighted the importance of continued diplomatic engagement on energy at a time when developments in West Asia can influence global supplies, transportation networks and commercial activity.

India’s broader energy strategy emphasises diversification of supply sources, dependable international partnerships and the development of infrastructure capable of supporting long-term economic growth.

Regional Connectivity Gains Diplomatic Attention

Connectivity was another central subject of the trilateral meeting. For India, improving international transport and logistics links remains an important part of strengthening trade relationships and accessing wider markets.

The UAE occupies a significant position in international maritime trade and logistics, connecting markets across West Asia, Africa, Europe and Asia. The United States brings substantial investment capabilities and technological expertise, while India contributes its growing manufacturing base and expanding transport infrastructure.

These complementary capabilities provide a foundation for cooperation in transport, logistics and economic connectivity.

India, the United States and the UAE also participate in the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor initiative, announced during the G20 Summit in New Delhi in September 2023.

The initiative envisages stronger transport and economic connections between India, West Asia and Europe through integrated maritime and railway infrastructure, alongside associated connectivity arrangements.

The Mumbai discussions took place within this wider context of regional connectivity cooperation. However, the publicly reported account of the trilateral meeting identifies energy and connectivity as its subjects without announcing a new corridor agreement or specific infrastructure project.

India–US Bilateral Talks Cover Trade, Defence and Technology

The trilateral meeting followed separate discussions between Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Mumbai.

During their bilateral engagement, the two ministers exchanged views on advancing the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. Their discussions covered trade, energy, technology, defence and people-to-people relations, alongside regional developments, including the situation in West Asia.

The United States remains an important partner in India’s efforts to expand cooperation in critical and emerging technologies, advanced manufacturing and defence. The two countries have also developed substantial commercial and investment relationships, supported by growing collaboration between their technology and industrial sectors.

The discussions in Mumbai demonstrated the breadth of bilateral cooperation and its relevance to wider regional engagement.

India–UAE Economic Partnership Provides a Strong Foundation

Jaishankar also held separate discussions with UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, reviewing progress under the India–UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

During the meeting, Jaishankar highlighted the expansion of bilateral economic relations following the signing of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement in 2022.

He stated that bilateral trade had crossed $100 billion, reflecting the growing commercial relationship between the two countries. He also noted increasing two-way investments and expanding cooperation in defence, energy and technology.

The UAE’s role as a major trading and investment partner strengthens the economic foundation for broader regional engagement involving India and the United States.

The combination of India’s industrial and technological capabilities, the UAE’s international connectivity and investment networks, and American expertise in advanced technologies creates opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation.

West Asia Developments Highlight the Importance of Regional Stability

The trilateral engagement took place against the backdrop of continuing international attention to developments in West Asia.

During their separate bilateral meeting, Jaishankar and Rubio discussed regional issues, including the West Asia crisis. Such developments have significant implications for international trade, energy markets and regional connectivity.

West Asia occupies a central position in global energy supplies and international shipping. Stability across the region is therefore important for maintaining dependable commercial connections between energy producers and major consuming economies.

India has consistently emphasised dialogue and diplomacy in addressing regional tensions. Its economic relations with Gulf countries, substantial Indian expatriate community and growing international trade links give it a direct interest in regional stability.

Cooperation with the United States and the UAE provides an opportunity to maintain diplomatic engagement on these interconnected economic and security issues.

Trilateral Engagement Strengthens India’s International Partnerships

The Mumbai meeting brought together three countries with substantial economic capabilities and established strategic relationships.

India’s expanding manufacturing sector, growing energy requirements and international commercial engagement make cooperation with major partners increasingly important. The United States contributes technological expertise and investment capabilities, while the UAE provides an important connection to energy markets, international logistics and regional investment networks.

The meeting also reflects India’s approach to maintaining productive partnerships across different regions while advancing its economic and strategic interests.

By focusing on energy, connectivity and contemporary international developments, the three countries have reinforced the importance of sustained diplomatic consultation.

The trilateral discussions provide a foundation for continued engagement alongside India’s established bilateral partnerships with the United States and the UAE. Strengthening these relationships will support India’s wider objectives of energy security, economic connectivity and international cooperation.
