India and Nepal have taken another important step in their long-standing development partnership with the foundation stone laying ceremony for a new hospital building in Manang district of Nepal’s Gandaki Province. The project will come up in Nason Rural Municipality and is expected to improve healthcare access for people living in the remote Himalayan region.
The foundation stone was jointly laid by Dr. Rakesh Pandey, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of India in Kathmandu, and Dhan Bahadur Gurung, Chairman of Nason Rural Municipality. The hospital building is being constructed with financial assistance of around 56 million Nepali Rupees from the Government of India.
For a mountainous district like Manang, healthcare infrastructure carries special importance. Difficult terrain, scattered settlements and distance from major urban centres often make timely medical access a challenge for local communities. The new hospital building is expected to provide better facilities, reduce dependence on distant hospitals and support local families with more accessible medical care.
Local stakeholders welcomed India’s assistance and expressed confidence that the project would bring meaningful improvement in health services in the area. The construction will be implemented through Nason Rural Municipality under India’s High Impact Community Development Project programme.
The HICDP framework has been one of the key instruments of India’s development cooperation with Nepal. It focuses on projects that directly benefit local communities in priority sectors such as health, education, drinking water, sanitation and public infrastructure. By supporting a hospital building in Manang, the programme continues its emphasis on practical, people-centred development.
India and Nepal share deep civilisational, cultural and people-to-people ties, and development cooperation remains an important pillar of this relationship. Projects of this nature reflect India’s continued support for Nepal’s infrastructure growth and community welfare, especially in regions where improved public facilities can make a direct difference to everyday life.
The Manang hospital project therefore stands not only as an infrastructure initiative, but also as a symbol of neighbourhood cooperation. It strengthens local healthcare capacity, supports Nepal’s development priorities and reinforces the close partnership between the two countries.
