India Extends USD 10 Million Support to Strengthen Africa’s Ebola Response

India has announced USD 10 million in support for Africa-led Ebola preparedness, response and recovery efforts, strengthening its role as a trusted health-security partner for the African continent. The announcement was made by Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda during a virtual summit of African Heads of State and Government and partners, organised by the African Union and chaired by Burundi President and African Union Chairperson Évariste Ndayishimiye.

The support comes at a critical moment as African health agencies and partner countries coordinate action against the ongoing Ebola outbreak. India’s assistance is aimed at strengthening immediate response capacity while also helping affected and at-risk countries build resilience for future public health emergencies. The pledge reflects New Delhi’s broader approach of supporting African priorities through practical cooperation, medical assistance and institutional capacity-building.

Health Minister Nadda said India remains committed to Africa-led efforts and announced USD 10 million for outbreak preparedness, response and recovery. He also highlighted that India has already delivered 45 tonnes of medical supplies to support affected regions. These supplies include critical materials needed for emergency health operations, diagnostics, treatment support and field-level disease-control measures.

India has also expressed readiness to provide additional assistance based on the requirements of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and countries at risk. The proposed support includes medical and laboratory supplies, diagnostic materials, essential medicines and nutritional assistance. This makes India’s contribution more than a financial pledge; it is a practical health-security package designed to support surveillance, treatment, containment and recovery.

The announcement also underlines India’s growing role in global health diplomacy. Over the past decade, India has projected itself as a reliable partner in medicines, vaccines, diagnostics, emergency relief and affordable healthcare solutions. Its assistance to Africa during the Ebola outbreak fits into the same framework: timely help, respect for local leadership and cooperation through established regional health institutions.

Ebola remains one of the most serious viral threats because of its severe clinical course and the pressure it places on public health systems. Rapid diagnosis, protective equipment, safe treatment facilities, contact tracing, community awareness and trained health workers are essential in controlling outbreaks. India’s support can help strengthen these frontline capabilities in affected regions.

The pledge also carries diplomatic significance. India and Africa have long shared development partnerships across health, education, technology, agriculture, energy and capacity-building. By backing Africa CDC and African Union-led response efforts, India is reinforcing a relationship based on solidarity and shared resilience.
