India and Saudi Arabia have reviewed progress on their proposed bilateral electrical interconnection initiative, marking another step towards strengthening energy cooperation between the two countries. The discussions also covered advanced power transmission technologies, renewable energy integration, electricity demand from data centres and modernisation of power grid infrastructure.
The meeting, held virtually on 19 October 2026, brought together Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary, Ministry of Power, and Eng. Nasser Al-Qahtani, Saudi Arabia’s Assistant Minister of Energy for Electricity Affairs.
Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the proposed electricity interconnection and expanding technical cooperation in the power sector.
India–Saudi Arabia Electrical Interconnection Project
The proposed India–Saudi Arabia electrical interconnection aims to establish a framework for cross-border electricity connectivity between the two countries.
Such an arrangement could create opportunities for electricity exchange, improved utilisation of generation resources and greater flexibility in managing power demand across interconnected grids.
During the meeting, officials reviewed the initiative’s progress and discussed the steps required to advance bilateral cooperation. Both sides emphasised sustained engagement and technical coordination.
The initiative reflects the growing importance of international electricity connectivity as countries expand renewable energy generation and modernise their transmission networks.
For India, cooperation with Saudi Arabia also offers opportunities to strengthen energy infrastructure partnerships with the Gulf region.
Saudi Arabia Seeks Cooperation in Extra High Voltage Transmission
A major focus of the discussions was cooperation in Extra High Voltage (EHV) transmission systems, which play a critical role in transporting large quantities of electricity across long distances.
Saudi Arabia expressed interest in expanding technical collaboration with India in this field, including the exchange of expertise and operational practices.
EHV networks are particularly important for connecting large power generation facilities with industrial centres, urban regions and expanding electricity distribution systems.
India’s experience in developing large-scale transmission infrastructure and integrating different sources of electricity generation provides a foundation for technical engagement between the two countries.
The proposed cooperation could support improved grid efficiency, reliability and the development of advanced transmission capabilities.
Renewable Energy Integration and Grid Stability
The two countries also discussed technical and operational challenges associated with increasing the proportion of renewable energy in electricity networks.
As solar and wind power generation expands, electricity grids must accommodate variations in generation while maintaining stable voltage, frequency and overall system reliability.
Managing these changes requires improved forecasting, flexible generation resources, modern transmission infrastructure and advanced grid management technologies.
India and Saudi Arabia explored opportunities to exchange knowledge and best practices in addressing these challenges.
The discussions are particularly relevant as both countries pursue greater diversification of their electricity generation systems and expand renewable energy capacity.
Rising Data Centre Power Demand Creates New Opportunities
Another important area of discussion involved strategies for meeting the growing electricity requirements of data centres.
The rapid expansion of cloud computing, artificial intelligence and digital services is increasing demand for reliable, high-capacity electricity infrastructure.
Data centres require uninterrupted electricity supply, sophisticated power management systems and dependable transmission and distribution networks.
Saudi Arabia expressed interest in cooperating with India on strategies to accommodate these emerging requirements.
Technical exchanges could help both countries develop approaches for planning electricity infrastructure around large digital facilities while maintaining wider grid stability.
Modernising Grid Codes and Power System Standards
India and Saudi Arabia also discussed cooperation in updating grid codes to address evolving electricity system requirements.
Grid codes establish technical and operational standards governing the connection and operation of electricity generators, transmission networks and other participants in the power system.
Modernising these standards is increasingly important as electricity networks incorporate renewable energy, energy storage, advanced power electronics and large electricity consumers.
The discussions highlighted opportunities for technical collaboration, knowledge sharing and the exchange of regulatory and operational best practices.
Greater cooperation in grid standards can support the development of more resilient and efficient electricity networks.
Strengthening India–Saudi Arabia Energy Cooperation
The electrical interconnection initiative represents an important area of engagement within the broader India–Saudi Arabia energy partnership.
While conventional energy trade remains a major component of bilateral relations, cooperation in electricity transmission, renewable energy integration and modern power infrastructure offers additional avenues for collaboration.
The latest discussions demonstrate a shared interest in building stronger technical and institutional partnerships in the electricity sector.
Both countries have agreed to maintain constructive dialogue to advance the proposed interconnection and explore further opportunities in power transmission and grid modernisation.
The continued engagement strengthens the foundation for a more integrated, technologically advanced and resilient energy partnership between India and Saudi Arabia.
