India Adds 9.7 GW of Power Generation Capacity this Fiscal Till Feb 28

India added 9.7 gigawatt (GW) of power generation capacity in FY21 (until February 28, 2021), Parliament was notified on Tuesday. Power and New & Renewable Energy Minister Mr. R K Singh stated in a written reply to Rajya Sabha that India added 9.7 GW of power generation capacity between April 2020 and February 2021, including 3.8 GW of conventional energy and 5.9 GW from renewable sources.

India added 15.8 GW of power generation capacity in FY20, including 7.1 GW from conventional sources and 8.8 GW from renewable sources.

From April 2015 to February 2021, India added 117.9 GW of power generation capacity, with conventional sources accounting for 64.5 GW and renewable sources accounting for 53.4 GW.

The minister said, “As of February 28, 2021, the country’s total installed power generation capacity, including renewable energy sources, was 379.1 GW. A total of 117.9 GW of power generation capacity has been added from conventional and renewable energy sources in the last five years and this year (until February 28, 2021).”

Furthermore, he reportedly stated that the total installed capacity of India’s power generation by the end of FY27 is estimated to be 6,19,066 MW, which includes 238,150 MW from coal, 25,735 MW from gas, 63,301 MW from hydro, 16,880 MW from nuclear, and 2,75,000 MW from renewable energy sources.
