The ninth edition of the India-Brazil-South Africa Maritime Exercise (IBSAMAR IX 2026) concluded at Simon’s Town, South Africa, on October 20, 2026, following ten days of joint naval activities. The trilateral exercise brought together the Indian Navy, Brazilian Navy and South African Navy to strengthen maritime cooperation, enhance operational interoperability and improve coordination among the three maritime forces.
INS Tarkash represented India’s naval engagement in the exercise, which included professional exchanges, operational interactions and joint training during harbour and sea phases. The activities provided opportunities for participating personnel to understand each other’s operational procedures, strengthen professional relationships and develop greater familiarity with maritime operations conducted by partner navies.
Ten Days of Joint Naval Training and Maritime Operations
IBSAMAR IX 2026 involved ten days of coordinated activities designed to strengthen the ability of the three navies to operate together in a maritime environment. The exercise combined harbour-based professional engagements with operational training at sea, allowing naval personnel to exchange practical knowledge and gain experience working alongside their counterparts.
During the harbour phase, participating personnel engaged in professional interactions and discussions covering operational procedures, capabilities and naval practices. These exchanges helped establish a common understanding of maritime operations and supported closer coordination among the participating forces.
The sea phase provided opportunities to translate professional understanding into practical cooperation through joint maritime evolutions. Such exercises allow participating navies to improve communication, coordination and operational familiarity while developing the confidence required for effective multinational naval operations.
INS Tarkash Highlights Importance of Trilateral Naval Cooperation
Addressing the closing ceremony, the Commanding Officer of INS Tarkash emphasised the importance of IBSAMAR in transforming longstanding diplomatic relationships into meaningful naval cooperation.
He highlighted that the value of multinational exercises extends beyond the execution of operational activities at sea. Professional relationships developed through shared experiences, practical training and mutual learning contribute significantly to building trust and understanding among participating naval personnel.
The interactions during IBSAMAR IX provided an opportunity for the Indian, Brazilian and South African navies to reinforce these professional bonds while improving their collective understanding of maritime operations.
Strengthening Maritime Security Across Three Continents
India, Brazil and South Africa occupy strategically important geographical positions across Asia, South America and Africa. Their maritime interests are connected through international shipping routes, ocean-based trade and the shared responsibility of maintaining safe and secure seas.
IBSAMAR serves as an important platform for strengthening cooperation among these three maritime nations. Through regular naval interactions, participating forces can exchange operational practices, improve interoperability and develop a better understanding of common maritime challenges.
The exercise also reinforces the importance of maritime stability and cooperation in supporting international commerce. Secure sea lanes, reliable maritime connectivity and coordinated responses to maritime challenges remain essential to the economic and strategic interests of all three countries.
Building Long-Term Interoperability Among Partner Navies
A central objective of IBSAMAR IX was to strengthen interoperability through repeated interactions, coordinated training and improved understanding of operational practices.
Multinational naval exercises play an important role in developing the ability of different maritime forces to function effectively together. Familiarity with communication procedures, operational methods and naval capabilities contributes to smoother coordination during future engagements.
The professional exchanges conducted during IBSAMAR IX also strengthened institutional relationships among the participating navies. By bringing together naval personnel from different operational environments, the exercise encouraged mutual learning and established connections that can support future cooperation.
IBSAMAR IX Reinforces India’s Maritime Partnerships
The successful conclusion of IBSAMAR IX 2026 reflects the continuing commitment of India, Brazil and South Africa to strengthening their trilateral maritime relationship.
For India, the exercise represents another important component of its expanding naval engagement with partner countries. It demonstrates the Indian Navy’s commitment to professional cooperation, multinational training and the promotion of maritime security through constructive international partnerships.
The ten-day exercise strengthened operational familiarity, reinforced professional relationships and advanced cooperation among the three navies. IBSAMAR IX has further consolidated the foundation for future trilateral naval engagements, supporting the shared objective of safe, secure and open seas within a rules-based maritime order.
