Gurukul Diplomacy in Vienna: Indian Envoy Brings Panchatantra Tales to Austrian Children

The Panchatantra is one of India’s most celebrated ancient collections of animal fables and moral stories. Traditionally composed to teach young princes the principles of wise conduct, leadership, diplomacy and practical decision-making, its stories continue to remain relevant for children and adults across cultures.

India’s cultural diplomacy in Austria took a warm and creative turn as Indian Ambassador Shambhu Kumaran read stories from the Panchatantra to school children in Vienna. The Indian Embassy described the initiative as “Gurukul Diplomacy,” highlighting the use of India’s ancient storytelling traditions to build cultural understanding among young audiences.

The event formed part of the Embassy’s wider effort to introduce Austrian children to the wisdom of Indian literature through stories that are simple, engaging and rich in life lessons. The Embassy had recently published a German-language translation of the Panchatantra for school children in Austria, making the classic Indian text more accessible to young readers.

Ambassador Kumaran said it was heartening to see Austrian children respond so naturally to the Panchatantra stories. He described the initiative as a cultural bridge connecting India and Austria across continents and generations through colourful tales and timeless values.

He also expressed appreciation for Austrian cartoonist Klaus Pitter, whose vibrant illustrations helped bring the stories alive for young readers. The combination of Indian storytelling and Austrian artistic expression added a unique local touch to the initiative.

The Ambassador has been regularly reading Panchatantra stories to children across Austria as part of this outreach. Earlier in June, the Indian Embassy in Austria, in collaboration with the City of Vienna and the “Bounce Back” project in local schools, launched another chapter of “Stories from the Panchatantra,” a video podcast series narrated in German by well-known Austrian podcaster Thomas Brezina.

At the launch event, more than fifty students from a Viennese school participated with enthusiasm. Ambassador Kumaran read selected stories and interacted with the children, who shared their favourite characters and the lessons they learned from the tales.

Through this initiative, India’s Embassy in Austria is presenting the Panchatantra not just as a literary classic, but as a living cultural bridge. By taking India’s ancient wisdom into Austrian classrooms, the programme strengthens people-to-people ties and shows how stories can create friendship, curiosity and shared understanding between nations.
