In a move for gender equality in the male-dominated environs of the over 15-lakh-strong armed forces, defence minister Rajnath Singh has okayed a proposal to admit girls in Sainik schools from the 2021-22 session in a phased manner.
The decision was taken after the success of the pilot project – girls were admitted in the Sainik School in Mizoram’s Chhingchhip two years ago.
The minister has asked the authorities concerned to ensure availability of necessary infrastructure and sufficient female staff in the Sainik schools.
The 31 Sainik schools in India churn out 25% of the cadets selected for National Defence Academy.
