Flying Wedge Defence Partners With Portugal’s Keydef to Manufacture Kaal Bhairava and YAMA Drones in Europe

For an Indian defence startup, overseas manufacturing represents a different model from conventional defence exports. Rather than supplying completed systems only from India, the company is seeking to combine Indian-developed platforms with local production capability in an overseas market.

Bengaluru-based Flying Wedge Defence & Aerospace has entered into a partnership with Portuguese defence company Keydef to manufacture its Kaal Bhairava autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle and YAMA swarm-interceptor drone in Portugal for international markets.

The agreement gives the Indian defence startup a manufacturing foothold in Europe and marks another step in the international expansion of India’s private drone and autonomous-systems sector.

The partnership was signed in Braga, Portugal, in the presence of India’s Ambassador to Portugal, according to company statements and reports surrounding the agreement.

Kaal Bhairava and YAMA to Be Manufactured in Portugal

Under the partnership, Keydef will work with Flying Wedge Defence & Aerospace to manufacture the Kaal Bhairava and YAMA platforms in Portugal.

The arrangement is intended to support supply to international customers while providing Flying Wedge with a European production base closer to potential markets in Europe and other regions.

For an Indian defence startup, overseas manufacturing represents a different model from conventional defence exports. Rather than supplying completed systems only from India, the company is seeking to combine Indian-developed platforms with local production capability in an overseas market.

Kaal Bhairava Designed as an Autonomous UAV Platform

Kaal Bhairava is part of Flying Wedge Defence’s autonomous unmanned-aircraft portfolio.

The company has positioned the system for missions requiring long-range autonomous operations and reduced dependence on continuous human control. Such capabilities are becoming increasingly important in modern military aviation as armed forces adopt unmanned systems for surveillance, reconnaissance and strike missions.

The growing use of autonomous UAVs has also increased demand for onboard computing, navigation, secure communications and artificial-intelligence-based mission systems.

Flying Wedge’s international manufacturing strategy is therefore linked not only to airframe production but also to the wider market for autonomous mission technologies.

YAMA Targets the Emerging Counter-Drone Market

YAMA has been developed as a swarm-interceptor platform intended to counter hostile unmanned aerial systems.

The rapid proliferation of inexpensive drones has created growing demand for systems capable of detecting, tracking and intercepting multiple airborne threats simultaneously.

Swarm-capable interceptors represent one approach to this problem by using multiple coordinated unmanned platforms rather than relying solely on conventional missiles or gun-based air-defence systems.

YAMA therefore places Flying Wedge in the fast-growing counter-UAS segment, which has gained importance following the widespread military use of small drones and loitering systems in recent conflicts.

Portugal Gives Flying Wedge a European Manufacturing Base

The agreement with Keydef gives Flying Wedge access to a production location within the European Union.

A manufacturing presence in Portugal could help the company engage more closely with European defence customers, suppliers and certification ecosystems while reducing some of the logistical barriers associated with supplying systems entirely from India.

Portugal has also been expanding its defence and technology links with India. Official Indian diplomatic records show that bilateral engagement has increasingly included technology, industrial cooperation and wider strategic ties.

For Flying Wedge, the Portugal partnership extends this broader India-Europe industrial engagement into autonomous defence systems.

Indian Defence Startups Push Into Overseas Markets

The Flying Wedge-Keydef agreement reflects a wider change in India’s defence-industrial landscape.

Indian private companies and startups are increasingly seeking customers and industrial partners outside the domestic market, particularly in drones, autonomous systems, electronic warfare, sensors, robotics and space technologies.

Overseas manufacturing partnerships can provide these companies with access to local supply chains and markets while retaining the design and intellectual-property base developed in India.

This model also complements India’s broader effort to increase defence exports and move from being primarily an importer of military equipment towards becoming a supplier of indigenously developed systems.

European Production Expands the Reach of Indian-Designed UAVs

The Portugal agreement is significant because it takes two Indian-developed unmanned systems beyond a purely domestic manufacturing model.

Kaal Bhairava addresses the autonomous UAV segment, while YAMA targets the increasingly important requirement for counter-drone and swarm-defence capabilities. Manufacturing both systems in Portugal gives Flying Wedge a platform for pursuing customers in Europe and other overseas markets without abandoning its Indian technology base.

The partnership therefore represents a notable step in the internationalisation of India’s defence startup ecosystem, with an Indian company moving from domestic development towards overseas production of autonomous military systems.
