India has taken a major step toward expanding indigenous missile production, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh approving the transfer of technologies for all conventional missile systems developed by DRDO to qualified Indian defence manufacturers.
The move will allow domestic companies to take DRDO-developed missile systems from the development stage into industrial-scale production, subject to applicable certification, qualification and regulatory requirements. It is intended to increase the participation of private industry, MSMEs and specialised technology partners across India’s defence manufacturing supply chain.
By widening access to mature missile technologies, the government aims to build greater production capacity within the country, increase domestic value addition and reduce dependence on imported systems and components. The initiative could also enable DRDO to concentrate more heavily on research and development of next-generation technologies while industry assumes a larger role in serial manufacture.
The policy represents a significant expansion of India’s defence indigenisation strategy, creating a broader industrial base capable of manufacturing advanced missile systems for the armed forces. DRDO will continue working with selected Indian companies to facilitate technology absorption and establish the necessary production capabilities.
The decision is expected to strengthen India’s missile manufacturing ecosystem while creating new opportunities for domestic defence companies and smaller suppliers to participate in strategically important weapons programmes.
