Daimler India Plans ₹4,000 Crore Tamil Nadu Investment to Expand BharatBenz Operations

Daimler India Commercial Vehicles plans to invest around ₹4,000 crore in Tamil Nadu to expand its BharatBenz commercial vehicle operations and strengthen future manufacturing and technology capabilities.

The proposed investment was announced alongside a non-binding facilitation MoU with the Tamil Nadu Government at the Tamil Nadu Investment Conclave.

Once implemented, the fresh investment would take Daimler India Commercial Vehicles’ cumulative investment in the country to more than ₹14,500 crore.

Expansion Expected to Create 400 Jobs

The proposed programme is expected to create around 400 additional jobs while strengthening product development, manufacturing, research and development, infrastructure and technology readiness.

The company is preparing its BharatBenz portfolio for growing demand from sectors such as highways, logistics, mining, ports and public transportation.

Higher infrastructure spending and expanding freight movement are expected to support demand for heavy and medium commercial vehicles over the coming years.

Oragadam Remains Core of BharatBenz Operations

Daimler India began commercial vehicle sales in the country in 2012 and has since placed more than 2.2 lakh BharatBenz trucks and buses on Indian roads.

Its Indian operations are centred around a 400-acre integrated manufacturing and R&D complex at Oragadam near Chennai.

The facility employs more than 4,000 people and has achieved around 92% localisation across its product value chain.

Nearly 400 local suppliers support the manufacturing ecosystem, strengthening domestic sourcing and component production.

More Than 420 Sales and Service Touchpoints

BharatBenz has built a nationwide customer support network with more than 420 dealership and service touchpoints.

The company also operates a logistics centre in Pune to support parts distribution and after-sales requirements.

The proposed investment is expected to improve service readiness, spare-parts availability and support for an expanding vehicle population.

Chennai Plant Serves 70 Global Markets

Daimler India’s Chennai operation has also developed into an important global manufacturing and export base for Daimler Truck.

The facility has exported more than 75,000 completed commercial vehicles and over 330 million components to approximately 70 international markets.

This export role makes the Tamil Nadu plant significant not only for BharatBenz’s domestic business but also for Daimler Truck’s wider international supply chain.

Tamil Nadu Strengthens Automotive Manufacturing Base

The ₹4,000 crore expansion would further reinforce Tamil Nadu’s position as one of India’s leading automotive manufacturing centres.

The state already hosts a large network of vehicle manufacturers, component suppliers, engineering companies and export-oriented factories.

For BharatBenz, the investment is expected to strengthen domestic manufacturing while preparing the company for new commercial vehicle technologies and future market requirements.

The proposed expansion therefore represents more than an increase in production capacity. It strengthens localisation, R&D, employment, supplier development and exports, while positioning the Oragadam facility for the next phase of India’s commercial vehicle growth.
