Throwing away cucumber peels after preparing your salad could be a past phenomenon. Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur have developed cellulose nanocrystals from cucumber peels with high cellulose content, compared to other peel wastes, which can be used to create food packaging materials.

Infrastructure major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has delivered the first hardware — a rocket booster for the launch vehicle of India’s maiden human space flight Gaganyaan — to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), an official said on Tuesday.

Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) constituent laboratory Structural Engineering Research Centre (SERC) based in Chennai has developed an indigenous technology, Emergency Retrieval System (ERS), for quick retrieval of power transmission in the event of failure of transmission line towers. The process of filtration is non-destructive where well or seabed gallery intake systems are constructed for the production of ballast seawater which would be made available to the ships virtually across all the global port facilities to provide contamination free water.

A team of researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT-R) claimed to have developed the world’s first specific reliable bacterial biosensor to detect the presence of SDS. According to the researchers, they genetically redesigned DNA of a specified bacterium (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) for their research.

A group of researchers led by Prof. S. Krishna Prasad, along with Dr Shankar Rao of the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS), Bangalore, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India has made major headway in developing such a cellulose-based smart screen from discarded ground nutshells.

Demonstrations were given on Water Mist Based FDSS for Passenger Compartment and Aerosol Based FDSS for engine fire. They were also briefed about the various other programs and systems.

Hoofed animals like horses and rhinos evolved from a strange sheep-sized animal that looked like a cross between a pig and a dog and roamed in India almost 55 million years ago, researchers have claimed.

The species were found in the coral reef in the Lakshadweep islands and have since been studied. The findings have been published in Zootaxa, an international peer-reviewed journal.

The schemes are SERB – POWER Fellowship and SERB – POWER Research Grants. These schemes are aimed to promote women researchers in regular service in academic and research institutions to take up research and development (R&D) at the highest level through these two categories of research support.
