Delhi-based defence technology company VEDA Aeronautics is developing an underwater decoy for the Indian Navy, with plans to subsequently evolve the platform into a miniature underwater attack drone, opening a potentially important new front in India’s development of autonomous naval warfare systems.

Bengaluru-based Vimag Labs is developing a different approach. Its Virtual Magnet Synchronous Motor, or VMSM, replaces fixed permanent magnets with an electrically generated rotor magnetic field controlled through power electronics and proprietary software.
QpiAI was established in Bengaluru in 2019 with the objective of combining artificial intelligence, quantum computing and high-performance classical computing. Its multidisciplinary team works across superconducting electronics, semiconductor technology, device physics, quantum algorithms, machine learning, software engineering and high-performance computing.

Astrome describes the platform as an auto-aligned, multi-beam E-band radio capable of providing fibre-like, multi-gigabit connectivity without requiring trenches or underground cables.
Unlike simpler medical devices that can be assembled from imported components, an MRI scanner requires expertise across superconducting magnets, radio-frequency engineering, gradient coils, image reconstruction, signal processing, embedded electronics, patient-handling systems and clinical software.

It designs the architecture, intellectual property and circuitry of its chips in India while relying on specialised semiconductor foundries for physical fabrication. Chennai-based Mindgrove Technologies is working to change this imbalance. The IIT Madras-incubated fabless semiconductor company designs indigenous system-on-chips for embedded equipment, connected devices, industrial automation and edge-computing applications.
