Balkrishna Industries and Pirelli Tyre S.p.A. signed three agreements covering the proposed joint venture, manufacturing arrangements and technical cooperation. These comprise a Framework Agreement, an Offtake Agreement and a Service Agreement, establishing the structure for cooperation between the two manufacturers.

Under the first phase, BKT will manufacture Pirelli-branded passenger car radial tyres at its existing manufacturing facility in Bhuj, Gujarat. Production will follow Pirelli’s technical specifications and quality requirements, with tyres supplied to Pirelli and its affiliates for sale in India and overseas markets.

The companies have announced plans to produce up to 800,000 Pirelli-branded premium car tyres by 2030. The arrangement allows Pirelli to establish a manufacturing presence in India through an experienced domestic partner while enabling BKT to expand into a new segment of the automotive tyre industry.

The Offtake Agreement establishes a commercial framework under which Pirelli will purchase tyres manufactured by BKT. The pricing arrangement will account for actual raw material costs and manufacturing conversion costs, while both companies will undertake corresponding supply and capacity commitments.

New 50:50 Joint Venture to Establish Manufacturing Plant in India

The second phase envisages the formation of a 50:50 joint venture between Balkrishna Industries and Pirelli to establish a dedicated passenger car radial tyre manufacturing facility in India. The new plant will produce high-value tyres under both the Pirelli and BKT brands, catering to Indian and international customers.

According to the agreement, the proposed joint venture will have equal ownership and governance representation. Each company will nominate two directors to a four-member board, while the position of chairperson will rotate between the partners. Manufacturing capacity will also be shared equally.

The companies intend to incorporate the joint venture by December 31, 2030, subject to the completion of the necessary agreements and regulatory requirements. The definitive joint venture agreement remains to be executed, and the proposed manufacturing facility will be developed as part of the subsequent implementation phase.

The partnership creates a long-term framework for combining Indian manufacturing infrastructure with advanced international tyre technology. It also provides BKT with an opportunity to expand its product portfolio beyond its traditional areas of manufacturing expertise.

Pirelli to Provide Advanced Tyre Technology and Testing Support

Technology cooperation forms an important component of the agreement. Under the Service Agreement, Pirelli will provide technical assistance and testing services to Balkrishna Industries for selected passenger car, sport utility vehicle and two-wheeler tyres manufactured under the BKT brand.

The arrangement includes access to Pirelli’s testing facilities, proving grounds, simulation systems and specialised equipment outside India. These capabilities will support the evaluation of tyre performance, handling characteristics, durability and other technical parameters required for passenger vehicle applications.

Pirelli will also provide the necessary technical specifications and limited rights to use its manufacturing know-how and trademarks for producing Pirelli-branded tyres at Bhuj. BKT will undertake manufacturing operations in accordance with the agreed technical and quality standards.

Access to established global testing and engineering expertise can help Indian manufacturers develop products for demanding automotive applications. The collaboration will also allow BKT to strengthen its technical capabilities as it expands into passenger car radial tyre manufacturing.

Balkrishna Industries Expands Beyond Off-Highway Tyres

Balkrishna Industries has established an international presence through its BKT brand, specialising in off-highway tyres used in agriculture, mining, construction and industrial applications. The company supplies specialised tyres to customers across numerous international markets and operates major manufacturing facilities in India.

Its manufacturing capabilities include advanced rubber processing, tyre engineering and production systems designed to meet international quality requirements. The company has also been expanding its activities into additional tyre categories, including passenger car tyres, commercial vehicle radial tyres and two-wheeler tyres.

The agreement with Pirelli represents a significant step in this diversification strategy. Passenger car radial tyres require specialised engineering to balance road grip, braking performance, handling, rolling resistance, noise levels and durability across different driving conditions.

By combining its manufacturing experience with Pirelli’s expertise in high-performance automotive tyres, BKT aims to strengthen its capabilities in this increasingly technology-intensive market.

India Emerges as an Important Market for Premium Automotive Tyres

The partnership comes as India’s passenger vehicle market continues to expand, supported by rising vehicle ownership, improved road infrastructure and increasing demand for premium automobiles and sport utility vehicles.

According to projections cited by the companies, passenger car registrations in India are expected to increase by approximately 5–7% annually between 2025 and 2030. The premium passenger car tyre segment is also projected to grow substantially during this period, reflecting changes in vehicle specifications and consumer preferences.

Modern passenger vehicles increasingly require tyres designed for higher performance, improved safety, lower rolling resistance and greater efficiency. The growing adoption of larger vehicles and electric mobility is also creating demand for tyres with specialised load-bearing, durability and noise characteristics.

Pirelli, which currently maintains a commercial presence in India, sees domestic manufacturing as an opportunity to participate more extensively in the country’s automotive market. The partnership will enable the Italian manufacturer to combine its established premium tyre portfolio with BKT’s industrial presence and manufacturing capabilities.

Indian Manufacturing Strength Attracts International Technology Partnerships

The collaboration reflects the growing importance of India as a destination for advanced automotive manufacturing. Domestic manufacturers have developed extensive capabilities in engineering, production, quality control and exports, enabling them to participate in increasingly sophisticated international supply chains.

BKT’s manufacturing infrastructure at Bhuj provides an established industrial foundation for the initial phase of the partnership. By using existing facilities, the companies can begin their manufacturing cooperation ahead of the proposed joint venture plant.

The subsequent establishment of a dedicated manufacturing facility would further expand domestic production capacity for premium passenger car tyres. It could also create opportunities for Indian suppliers involved in rubber compounds, speciality chemicals, steel reinforcement materials, manufacturing equipment and industrial automation.

International partnerships of this nature complement India’s Make in India initiative by bringing together domestic industrial capabilities and specialised technological expertise. They also support the development of products that meet international automotive quality and performance requirements.

Partnership to Support Domestic and International Markets

The agreement provides both companies with opportunities to expand their market presence through a combination of manufacturing, technology cooperation and established distribution networks.

For Balkrishna Industries, the partnership supports its entry into the passenger car radial tyre segment while strengthening its technological capabilities. The opportunity to manufacture Pirelli-branded products also provides exposure to international quality standards and premium automotive applications.

For Pirelli, the agreement establishes a route towards local production in one of the world’s expanding automotive markets. Manufacturing in India will allow the company to develop its presence while drawing on BKT’s industrial infrastructure and experience.

The proposed joint venture is intended to serve both Indian and overseas markets. This international orientation could strengthen India’s position as a manufacturing base for premium automotive components and support future export opportunities.

Strengthening India’s Premium Automotive Manufacturing Ecosystem

The Balkrishna Industries–Pirelli partnership marks an important expansion of India’s automotive manufacturing capabilities into higher-value passenger car tyre production. The initial arrangement to manufacture up to 8 lakh Pirelli-branded tyres by 2030 establishes a defined production objective, while the proposed joint venture provides a framework for longer-term industrial expansion.

The collaboration combines Indian manufacturing expertise with international technology, research and testing capabilities. It also creates opportunities for greater domestic participation in sophisticated automotive component manufacturing.

As the partnership progresses, BKT’s expansion into premium passenger car tyres will contribute to the diversification of India’s tyre industry. The proposed manufacturing investments and technical cooperation further reinforce India’s growing role in global automotive production and the development of advanced industrial capabilities.
