New technology for High Electron Mobility Transistor will make India self-reliant

Scientists from Bangalore have developed a highly reliable, High Electron Mobility Transistor (HEMTs) that is a normally OFF device and can switch currents up to 4A and operates at 600V. This first-ever indigenous HEMT device made from gallium nitride (GaN) is useful in electric cars, locomotives, power transmission and other areas requiring high voltage and high-frequency switching would reduce the cost of importing such stable and efficient transistors required in power electronics.

India Digs to Find When Continents Split

Fresh excavations have begun at Mandro Fossil Park in Jharkhand to try and find answers to exactly when Australia and Antarctica split from India — with the help of plant fossils. Nearly 50 fossils have been dug up between March 9 and 13 as part of the study, led by the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP) in Lucknow with the Jharkhand forest department.

Ordnance Factory Medak to Roll Out Mine-Proof BMP Tanks Soon

Indian Army facing Chinese aggression at the borders will soon be fortified with all new mine-proof Futuristic Infantry Combat Vehicles (FICV) and special high altitude vehicles. The military hardware is being manufactured at Ordnance Factory Medak, at Yeddumailaram in Sangareddy district. The FICV will be equipped with Instant Fire Detection and Suppression system (IFDSS).

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and Cancer Research UK (CRUK) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a Cancer Research Initiative, “Affordable Approaches to Cancer” on 14th November 2018 during the Inaugural Researcher’s Summit held from 14th – 16th November 2018 in New Delhi. The broad aim of the research initiative is to support high quality research to deliver innovative and translatable outputs that accelerate progress against cancer outcomes in both the countries, and which also have the potential to have major global impact.

New Method for Efficient Removal of Heavy Metals from Water

Heavy metals in water could lead to several neurological diseases in humans including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis. A research team at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi has developed a fibrous membrane filter using a biopolymer-based material that helps to separate out the heavy metals from water samples.
