For the first time, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has collected genome sequence of 1,008 Indians, representing over 55 different ethnic populations and age groups, creating a bank of genetic data. Genome sequencing is the process of figuring out the order of DNA nucleotides, or bases, in a genome.
Scientists at the UM-DAE Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences, University of Mumbai and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) subjected triphala to detailed chemical characterization and found abundance of polyphenols. They also tested its action on molecules involved in development of neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s disease to study its mechanism of action, according to findings published in journal RSC Advances.
During his interaction with them, Singh reiterated that the Andaman & Nicobar islands were strategically important for national security and would provide critical capability to monitor sea areas in the region. “Admiral Karambir Singh, Chief of the Naval Staff, visited INS Baaz, Campbell Bay, Great Nicobar Island and spent a day with the personnel stationed in various units in Campbell Bay,” the Navy said in a statement.

The development was shared by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Director General S S Deswal on Wednesday. Deswal explained that since the last five years 25 Border Outposts (BOPs) have been created for the ITBP along the border with China. Seven out of 25 BOPs are in Ladakh and 10 more are planned to come up. A BOP has a strength of about 100 troops, meaning there has been a deployment of 2,500 soldiers. There are currently about 180 BOPs. He also said that patrolling along the LAC has increased due to this.
Agriculture scientist Altaf Eijaj Andrabi told IANS, “saffron is cultivated only in Jammu and Kashmir, but it has a demand all over the world. India exports saffron to England, America and some Middle East countries. It sells at Rs 5 lakh per kilogram in the international market. In India it sells at about Rs 3 lakh per kg.”
