Specialist Cadre Needed For Space Warfare, Feel Defence Forces

In order strengthen Indian expertise in the space arena, a specialist cadre needs to be formed from the military and scientific community, realised the defence forces during the country’s maiden space warfare exercise.

The three services, held their first table-top space warfare exercise code named IndSpaceEx in order to develop a doctrine in space warfare.

“One of the main outcomes of the exercise was that there was a need felt for developing a specialist cadre from military and DRDO along with the Other scientific community,” Defence sources told ANI.

After Mission Shakti, this exercise is first such attempt by the defence forces to develop a doctrine for space warfare and apart from the three service, the other participants were DRDO, think tanks and academia.

According to the sources, another realisation from the war game was that the infrastructure available in the country in form of start-ups and space technology industry can be used for developing military utilisation of space.

In order to prepare India for the future space wars, the forces are developing a Joint Space Doctrine.

To provide new capabilities to the defence forces in space warfare, the Defence Space Research Agency has been created and the defence forces are working closely with the agency.

India is ready for production and launch of satellites for space military requirements, but the coordination between stakeholders including DRDO, ISRO, NITI Aayog, and other agencies are needed, the participants in the exercise felt, said the sources.

The source said the Prime Minister’s office may come out with a space policy in near future.
