India is building missile-proof shelters to protect IAF fighter jets near Pakistan, China borders! The central government has cleared the project of constructing hardened shelters for Indian Air Force at key locations on border areas, states an ANI report. According to the report, as many as 110 hardened shelters, known as blast pens, will come up. These shelters will be built with the aim of protecting IAF aircraft from enemy missiles and bombing. Blast pens generally act as protection from any bombing possible threat.

Here are details of IAF fighter jets shelter project

These blast pens will have very thick concrete walls with the capability to endure missile attacks and bombings. The projected cost of building these blast pens has been reported at Rs 5,000 crore. The project will be completed in a phased manner.

These blast pins would give Indian Air Force the much required cutting-edge advantage. After completion of the project, IAF will no longer be forced to keep its fighter jets away from the frontline to avoid damage in case of an enemy strike. IAF will have the option to deploy its aircraft at locations close to borders which would result in less time to scramble jets and thwart an attack if any.

Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force is set to get more firepower with the Su-30 MKIs fighter jets being equipped with Israeli SPICE 2000 bombs, which were used to destroy targets in Balakot by IAF’s Mirage 2000 fighter jets. The Russian-made Su-30 MKIs are also being equipped with BrahMos supersonic cruise missile and the BrahMos NG missiles.

In wake of the Pulwama terror attack that killed 40 CRPF men, the Indian Air Force recently carried out non-military preemptive airstrikes in Pakistan’s Balakot, destroying JeM’s biggest terror training camp. Following the Balakot airstrikes, Pakistan’s F-16 fighter jets violated Indian airspace only to be chased away by IAF. One US-made F-16 crashed across Line Of Control (LoC). India presented proof that F-16 fighter jets launched an AMRAAM missile which failed to hit its target.
