Until now, Malgudi and Malgudi station were fictional places in south India that were popularised through novels and short stories by RK Narayan. The town and the station, that are at the centre of Narayan’s best works, were household names in the late 80s and the early 90s.

But now, the fictional station will exist for real.

Recently, Indian Railways decided to rename the Arasalu Railway Station in Karnataka to Malgudi Railway Station. The station lies on the Shivamogga-Talaguppa railway line and is located in Hosanagar taluka.

Some of the most iconic shots from the Malgudi Days TV series were shot at this station. According to reports, renaming the station was a way of paying homage to Shankar Nag, the Indian actor who directed some of the episodes.

Apart from renaming the station, the Indian Railways has also promised to renovate the station with a budget of Rs 1.3 crore, reported The Hindu. There were also plans to set up a Malgudi museum near the station, BY Raghavendra, Member of Parliament from Shivamogga told the newspaper.

“I discussed the matter of renaming the station and setting up the museum with the Divisional Manager and the response was enthusiastic,” said BY Raghavendra.

The Yeshwantpur-Mysuru Express, that that runs between Mysore Junction and Yesvantpur Junction, was renamed as Malgudi Express by Indian Railways in 2011.
