Mumbai-headquartered Prostarm Info Systems is expanding deeper into India’s battery energy storage sector with a 1.2 GWh annual-capacity Battery Energy Storage System manufacturing facility at Reliance MET City in Jhajjar, Haryana. The facility represents a major step in the company’s transition from its established power-backup business towards large-scale energy-storage manufacturing and project deployment.
The Haryana plant has been designed to manufacture BESS solutions for both utility-scale projects and commercial and industrial applications. Prostarm has allocated approximately ₹25 crore towards the facility as it builds domestic manufacturing capability in a segment expected to become increasingly important as renewable power forms a larger share of India’s electricity system.
The expansion is being supported by an emerging order pipeline. Prostarm has secured battery-storage projects involving Adani Electricity, Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited and Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited, giving the company exposure to different models of grid-scale energy storage deployment.
1.2 GWh Manufacturing Capacity at Jhajjar
Prostarm’s new facility is located at Reliance MET City in Jhajjar, Haryana, and will have an annual manufacturing capacity of 1.2 GWh. The company has positioned the plant as a forward-integration move that will give it greater control over manufacturing, product quality, supply chains and product development.
The facility will cater to two important segments of the storage market. Utility-scale systems can be deployed alongside renewable-generation and electricity-grid infrastructure, while commercial and industrial systems can help businesses manage power availability, peak demand and backup requirements.
Prostarm had earlier targeted commissioning of the Jhajjar facility by the end of FY2025-26. Its FY2025-26 investor presentation subsequently stated that the plant was nearing commissioning and was expected to become operational during the first quarter of FY2026-27. The company has since filed a further disclosure concerning a revision in the timeline for commencement of its manufacturing facilities, making the development schedule an evolving process rather than a single fixed commissioning date.
Adani Electricity Order Establishes an Early BESS Reference
Prostarm’s entry into large-scale battery storage is already being accompanied by commercial orders. The company disclosed an approximately ₹52 crore order from Adani Electricity for a 22 MWh BESS project.
The project provides Prostarm with an early reference in the electricity-distribution segment while the company develops its manufacturing capability. Such installations can provide rapid power response, support grid stability and allow electricity stored during suitable periods to be dispatched when required.
For Prostarm, the significance extends beyond the individual project. Establishing a manufacturing base while simultaneously executing commercial BESS installations allows the company to build engineering and operational experience alongside production capability.
Bihar Project Adds 120 MWh of Storage Capacity
Prostarm has also received a Letter of Award from Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited for a substantially larger battery-storage project.
The Bihar project involves 120 MWh of storage capacity under a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer arrangement. Prostarm’s disclosures indicate that the project carries a 12-year monthly rental model, giving the company exposure not only to equipment supply but also to longer-duration storage infrastructure operations.
This model differs significantly from a conventional equipment sale. Long-term BESS projects can create recurring revenue streams while requiring the developer to maintain system performance throughout the contractual period.
The Bihar project therefore forms part of Prostarm’s broader move from supplying power equipment towards owning, operating and maintaining energy-storage assets.
Karnataka Order Takes Prostarm Into 300 MWh Grid Storage
The company’s largest disclosed storage award among these projects comes from Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited.
Prostarm secured a Letter of Award for a 150 MW/300 MWh BESS project under a Build-Own-Operate model. The project also carries a 12-year monthly rental arrangement.
At 300 MWh, the Karnataka project represents a substantial increase in scale compared with Prostarm’s earlier storage orders. It also connects the company’s manufacturing expansion directly with the emerging requirement for grid-level storage as states add increasing quantities of variable renewable electricity.
Large BESS installations can absorb electricity when generation exceeds immediate demand and return that power to the grid when required. Their rapid response capability also makes them useful for grid balancing as solar and wind generation fluctuate during the day.
Order Book Crosses ₹1,200 Crore
Prostarm entered FY2026-27 with a substantial overall order pipeline. At the end of FY2025-26, the company reported an order book of approximately ₹1,202.2 crore across its businesses.
The order book included BESS projects from Adani, KPTCL and BSPGCL alongside business from Larsen & Toubro, South Central Railway, Steel Authority of India Limited and India1 Payments.
The combination reflects Prostarm’s continuing presence in conventional power-conditioning and backup systems while it builds a larger position in lithium batteries and grid-scale storage.
This transition is important because BESS manufacturing is substantially different from the company’s traditional UPS business. Large storage projects combine battery modules, battery-management systems, power-conversion equipment, thermal management, control systems, fire protection and software into integrated installations capable of operating safely over long periods.
Domestic Manufacturing Becomes Central to Prostarm’s Expansion
The Jhajjar investment is intended to give Prostarm direct manufacturing capability as its storage project portfolio increases.
Instead of remaining primarily an integrator sourcing completed storage systems from external suppliers, the 1.2 GWh facility is designed to bring a greater portion of the BESS value chain within the company’s manufacturing operations.
Prostarm has described this as forward integration into the energy-storage sector, with greater control over quality, supply chains and product innovation among the principal objectives.
The company has also been strengthening its technology supply chain. During FY2026-27, Prostarm announced a memorandum of understanding with Shenzhen Topband as part of its broader operational and technology strategy.
Battery Storage Becomes Critical to India’s Renewable Expansion
The timing of Prostarm’s investment coincides with a structural change underway in India’s electricity sector.
Solar generation reaches its maximum output during daylight hours, while electricity demand frequently remains high after solar production begins declining in the evening. Wind generation can similarly fluctuate according to weather conditions. As the proportion of these sources increases, electricity storage becomes increasingly important for balancing generation and consumption.
Battery storage provides one mechanism for addressing this problem. Electricity generated during periods of high renewable production can be stored and subsequently supplied when demand increases or renewable generation falls.
Storage systems can additionally provide rapid grid-response services and reduce dependence on conventional backup generation in certain applications. This has transformed BESS from a relatively specialised technology into an increasingly important component of India’s future electricity infrastructure.
Prostarm Moves From Power Backup Towards Grid Infrastructure
Prostarm’s Jhajjar facility represents a larger industrial shift within the company.
Its traditional business has been built around UPS systems, batteries, power-conditioning equipment and associated services. The development of a 1.2 GWh BESS manufacturing facility moves the company into an industry where individual projects can involve hundreds of megawatt-hours of storage capacity and operating agreements extending for more than a decade.
The 22 MWh Adani Electricity project, 120 MWh Bihar project and 300 MWh Karnataka project provide an early foundation for that transition.
Manufacturing capacity alone will not determine Prostarm’s position in the market. Execution of these projects, utilisation of the Jhajjar plant, technology performance and the ability to compete for subsequent utility-scale contracts will determine how rapidly the company’s storage business develops.
Nevertheless, the combination of a dedicated 1.2 GWh manufacturing base and an expanding portfolio of grid-storage projects places Prostarm among the Indian companies building domestic capability for the next stage of the country’s electricity transition.
As renewable capacity continues to expand, India’s power system will increasingly require infrastructure capable of storing electricity rather than merely generating and transmitting it. Prostarm’s investment in Jhajjar is aimed squarely at that emerging requirement.
