Chennai-based drone manufacturer RFLY Innovations has completed the delivery of its indigenous RFLY-PRO unmanned aerial vehicles to the Indian Army for high-altitude surveillance operations, adding another domestically developed platform to the Army’s expanding unmanned surveillance capability.
RFLY confirmed the delivery through its official company communication, stating that the UAVs had been supplied specifically for operations in demanding high-altitude environments. The company has also provided training and operational support to Army personnel to enable effective deployment of the systems in the field.
RFLY-PRO Designed for Surveillance Operations
The RFLY-PRO family consists of multirotor UAVs developed for surveillance, reconnaissance and sensor-carrying missions. The platforms use a carbon-fibre structure and foldable configuration intended to simplify transportation and deployment in field conditions.
RFLY’s published specifications for the PRO-L1 variant indicate an all-up weight below 12 kg and endurance of up to 60 minutes. The platform is listed with an operating altitude of up to 4,500 metres above mean sea level and a visual-line-of-sight range of approximately five kilometres.
The manufacturer also lists wind resistance of up to 12 metres per second and an operating temperature envelope extending from -20°C to +55°C. Different sensor configurations can be integrated according to mission requirements.
Built for High-Altitude Conditions
High-altitude operation presents particular difficulties for multirotor UAVs. Lower atmospheric density reduces the amount of lift generated by rotors, while low temperatures can affect battery performance. Strong winds, snow and rapidly changing weather add further complications during launch, surveillance and recovery.
RFLY has previously tested its unmanned systems with the Indian Army under such conditions. The company’s Cruise VTOL fixed-wing UAV underwent field trials with the Army at Joshimath, where the platform was operated during snowfall, rain and challenging high-altitude weather.
The delivery of the RFLY-PRO therefore follows earlier field interaction between the Indian company and Army units operating in demanding terrain.
Indigenous Systems for Battlefield Surveillance
Small surveillance UAVs have become increasingly important for ground forces because they allow units to observe terrain and potential threats without continuously exposing personnel.
Multirotor platforms are particularly useful for tactical surveillance because they can take off and land vertically, hover over specific areas and operate without conventional runways. Their comparatively small logistical footprint also allows them to accompany units deployed in mountainous regions.
The RFLY-PRO delivery provides the Army with another Indian-built system in this category while giving the manufacturer operational experience from military deployment.
Training and Operational Support Included
RFLY’s involvement has extended beyond supplying the aircraft. The company confirmed that its personnel provided training and operational assistance intended to support the effective use of the UAVs after delivery.
Such support is particularly relevant for small military UAVs because operational performance depends on more than the airframe itself. Mission planning, sensor operation, communications, battery management and procedures for operating in difficult weather conditions all influence the effectiveness of the system in the field.
Another Step for India’s Indigenous Drone Industry
RFLY Innovations was established in Chennai in 2017 and develops UAV platforms for defence, industrial and specialised surveillance applications. Its portfolio covers multirotor aircraft, VTOL systems, heavy-lift platforms and sensor-equipped UAVs.
The company’s latest delivery comes as Indian private-sector manufacturers increasingly move from developing and demonstrating UAV technology to supplying systems intended for operational use by the armed forces.
For the domestic drone ecosystem, this transition is important. Field deployment exposes indigenous systems to the demanding environments for which they were designed and provides manufacturers with experience that can feed into subsequent improvements in propulsion, endurance, sensors, communications and reliability.
The RFLY-PRO delivery represents another such step, placing an Indian-developed surveillance UAV into Army service for one of the most technically demanding operating environments faced by unmanned aircraft: sustained surveillance at high altitude.
