India and Uganda Seek Deeper Technology, Investment and Capacity-Building Partnership at BRICS Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Ugandan Vice President Jessica Rose Epel Alupo in New Delhi on September 13 on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit, with the two sides agreeing to strengthen cooperation in technology, capacity building, investment and private-sector partnerships.

The meeting provided both leaders an opportunity to review the broader India–Uganda relationship and identify areas where development cooperation and economic engagement can be expanded. Prime Minister Modi also thanked Vice President Alupo for Uganda’s participation in the BRICS Summit.

Technology and Knowledge Partnerships to Expand

India and Uganda agreed on the need to intensify cooperation in priority sectors through technology partnerships, knowledge sharing and capacity-building programmes. Such cooperation has long formed an important part of India’s engagement with African countries, particularly in areas where technical expertise, training and institutional development can contribute directly to economic growth.

The two leaders also emphasised greater collaboration between businesses in the two countries. Investment facilitation and stronger private-sector participation were identified as important mechanisms for taking the relationship beyond government-led development programmes and building more durable commercial links.

India Reaffirms Support for Uganda’s Vision 2040

Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s support for Uganda’s Vision 2040, the country’s long-term development framework aimed at transforming Uganda into a modern and prosperous economy.

India and Uganda described their development partnership as a source of strength for both countries. India’s engagement with Uganda has included capacity building, education, skills development, infrastructure and other development-oriented programmes, providing a foundation on which the two sides can build new areas of cooperation.

People-to-People Relations Remain an Important Pillar

Both leaders highlighted the importance of the strong people-to-people relationship between India and Uganda. The longstanding presence of an Indian-origin community in Uganda, together with educational, commercial and cultural exchanges, has helped provide continuity and depth to bilateral relations.

The two sides agreed that these connections should continue to complement expanding cooperation between their governments and private sectors.

India and Uganda Call for Stronger Voice for Global South

Prime Minister Modi and Vice President Alupo also called for closer bilateral engagement in advancing the interests and concerns of the Global South.

For India, cooperation with African countries has become an increasingly important component of its wider diplomatic effort to push for greater representation of developing countries in international institutions and global economic decision-making. Uganda’s participation at the BRICS Summit provided another platform for consultations on these shared priorities.

The Modi–Alupo meeting reflects India’s broader effort to deepen its partnerships across Africa through development cooperation, technology transfer, capacity building and investment while simultaneously building greater coordination among developing countries on international issues.
