Mahindra Aerostructures to Manufacture Airbus A320neo and A321XLR Fuselage Skins in Bengaluru

Under the new contract, Mahindra Aerostructures will manufacture the metallic fuselage skins used in Sections 18 and 19 of the A320 family aircraft, covering portions of the rear fuselage and tail area.

India’s aerospace manufacturing sector has secured another significant place in Airbus’ global production network, with Mahindra Aerostructures Private Limited receiving a multi-year contract to manufacture fuselage skins for the Airbus A320 family at its Bengaluru facility.

Announced on August 31, 2026, the contract covers complex structural components for the Airbus A320neo and the long-range A321XLR. The work will require Mahindra Aerostructures to establish additional specialised manufacturing processes in India and represents an expansion of the company’s role from supplying aircraft components and sub-assemblies towards producing increasingly sophisticated aerostructures for one of the world’s largest commercial aircraft programmes.

Rear Fuselage and Tail Sections to Be Manufactured in India

Under the new contract, Mahindra Aerostructures will manufacture the metallic fuselage skins used in Sections 18 and 19 of the A320 family aircraft, covering portions of the rear fuselage and tail area.

The scope comprises eight fuselage skins for Section 18 and three fuselage skins for Section 19, giving Mahindra responsibility for manufacturing 11 specialised skin components within the contracted work package. These parts will be produced at the company’s aerospace manufacturing facility in Bengaluru before being supplied to Airbus’ manufacturing facility in Augsburg, Germany.

Although a fuselage skin may appear externally to be a comparatively simple sheet of metal, producing one for a commercial airliner involves extremely demanding manufacturing tolerances. Aircraft skins must meet precise specifications relating to thickness, curvature, surface quality, structural strength and dimensional accuracy while remaining light enough to minimise aircraft weight.

The sections also have to integrate accurately with frames, stringers and adjoining structural assemblies when the fuselage is constructed. Maintaining this precision across large production volumes is therefore an important measure of an aerospace supplier’s manufacturing capability.

Mahindra to Establish Advanced Manufacturing Processes

The Airbus contract will lead Mahindra Aerostructures to expand the technological capabilities of its Bengaluru plant. The company plans to establish new production infrastructure involving advanced chemical milling, surface treatment and stretch forming as part of a multi-year industrialisation programme.

Chemical milling is an aerospace manufacturing process in which material is selectively removed from a metallic component through controlled chemical treatment. In aircraft structures, this can allow different areas of the same skin panel to have different thicknesses, retaining material where greater structural strength is required while removing unnecessary weight elsewhere.

Stretch forming is similarly important for large aircraft structures. The process forms metal sheets into complex aerodynamic curves by stretching them over precisely shaped dies while controlling deformation. Producing large fuselage skins with consistent curvature and dimensional accuracy requires specialised machinery, tooling and process expertise.

Surface-treatment capabilities are equally important because aircraft structures must withstand decades of exposure to changing temperatures, moisture, pressure cycles and environmental conditions. These processes help provide corrosion protection while preparing components for subsequent assembly and finishing operations.

Bringing these capabilities into Mahindra’s Bengaluru operation will therefore create manufacturing infrastructure that could eventually be applied to a wider range of large and complex aircraft structures.

First Deliveries Targeted for 2028

The programme has already entered its initial engineering phase. Mahindra says work involving tooling design, manufacturing process-flow modifications, qualification procedures and inspection planning is underway, with the first fuselage-skin deliveries scheduled for 2028.

The relatively long industrialisation period reflects the demanding certification and quality requirements involved in joining the production chain of a commercial aircraft programme. Before regular supply begins, manufacturing processes, tooling, materials, inspection procedures and production controls must all be demonstrated to consistently meet Airbus requirements.

Once qualified, the Bengaluru facility will become part of the production network supporting A320-family aircraft assembled internationally. The significance of the contract therefore extends beyond an individual component order because it embeds an Indian manufacturing facility within a long-duration global aerospace supply chain.

Supporting Both the A320neo and A321XLR

The work package covers two important members of the Airbus single-aisle aircraft family. The A320neo is one of the principal aircraft used by airlines around the world for short- and medium-haul services, while the larger A321XLR has been developed to provide substantially greater range within a narrow-body aircraft configuration.

The A321XLR is particularly significant because it allows airlines to operate longer routes that historically required larger wide-body aircraft. Its combination of extended range and single-aisle operating economics has created new possibilities for direct connections between cities that may not generate sufficient passenger volumes to support larger aircraft.

Producing fuselage components that are common to these high-volume and technologically advanced aircraft programmes places Mahindra Aerostructures within one of the most important segments of global commercial aviation manufacturing.

Contract Fits Mahindra’s Plan to Build Larger Fuselage Structures

The latest contract is also part of a broader strategy within Mahindra Aerostructures. The company has indicated that the new fuselage-skin package, together with a recently concluded roll-forming contract from Airbus, supports its longer-term objective of manufacturing larger fuselage sections in India.

This progression is important for the development of India’s aerospace industry. Aerospace manufacturing typically advances through a capability ladder, beginning with individual machined components and sheet-metal parts before moving towards sub-assemblies, structural assemblies and eventually complete aircraft sections.

Greater responsibility for large aerostructures means Indian manufacturers capture a larger portion of the value added during aircraft production while simultaneously developing expertise in tooling, precision forming, surface treatment, quality assurance, supply-chain management and complex structural assembly.

The new A320-family contract therefore represents another step in Mahindra’s movement up that aerospace manufacturing chain.

Mahindra Already Building Airbus Helicopter Fuselages

The A320 contract follows a substantial expansion of the relationship between Mahindra Aerostructures and Airbus Helicopters.

In April 2025, Airbus selected Mahindra to manufacture and assemble the main fuselage of the H130 light helicopter in Bengaluru. The completed fuselage assemblies are scheduled to be supplied to Airbus Helicopters in Europe, with the first delivery planned from March 2027.

Four months later, Airbus awarded Mahindra another major work package covering the main fuselage of the H125 helicopter. Industrialisation of that programme is also taking place in Bengaluru, with initial fuselage deliveries targeted for 2027.

Those programmes require Mahindra to manufacture complete primary fuselage structures rather than merely individual parts. Together with the latest A320-family work package, they demonstrate a widening relationship in which the Bengaluru facility is contributing to both Airbus commercial-aircraft and helicopter programmes.

Mahindra’s FY2025-26 reporting described its aerostructures business as having an order book of approximately $1.13 billion, while noting that the H125 and H130 contracts had made it a major fuselage supplier for two of Airbus Helicopters’ most important platforms.

Bengaluru Becoming a High-Value Aerospace Manufacturing Centre

The latest contract also strengthens Bengaluru’s position within India’s aerospace manufacturing ecosystem. The city already hosts major public-sector aerospace organisations, private manufacturers, engineering companies, component suppliers, research institutions and a large pool of aerospace and software engineering talent.

Mahindra Aerostructures operates a major manufacturing facility near Bengaluru capable of producing aerospace parts, sub-assemblies and larger aerostructures. The company holds AS9100D certification and six NADCAP certifications, in addition to customer-specific aerospace accreditations.

The addition of chemical milling, stretch forming and advanced surface-treatment infrastructure will deepen that industrial base by adding processes that are crucial for manufacturing larger primary aircraft structures.

Such capabilities are particularly valuable because commercial aircraft manufacturers require suppliers to demonstrate extremely high levels of repeatability and traceability. Every component must be produced according to approved processes, and detailed manufacturing records must be maintained throughout the supply chain.

India Taking a Larger Role in Airbus’ Global Supply Chain

Airbus has steadily increased the volume and complexity of aerospace work sourced from India. By 2025, the European aerospace manufacturer said it was procuring approximately $1.4 billion worth of components and services annually from India, with Indian suppliers contributing to every Airbus commercial aircraft.

That sourcing relationship has increasingly moved beyond individual components. India now participates in major structural manufacturing and final aircraft assembly programmes, including the C295 military transport aircraft Final Assembly Line developed with Tata Advanced Systems and plans for an Indian H125 helicopter assembly line.

Mahindra’s expanding Airbus relationship fits into this wider evolution. Indian suppliers are gradually moving from being cost-competitive manufacturers of individual aerospace components towards taking responsibility for sophisticated assemblies requiring advanced engineering, certification and production capabilities.

This development is strategically important because aerospace manufacturing has unusually high barriers to entry. Suppliers that establish certified production processes and reliable delivery performance can remain integrated into aircraft programmes for many years, creating long-term industrial capability rather than short-term manufacturing orders.

A Broader Global Aerospace Business

Mahindra Aerostructures is also developing relationships with aerospace manufacturers beyond Airbus. In June 2025, the company announced a multi-year contract worth approximately $300 million with Spain-based Aernnova Aerospace to manufacture metallic components and sub-assemblies for several Airbus and Embraer programmes.

That agreement includes work supporting the Embraer C-390 Millennium military transport aircraft, along with commercial aircraft components supplied to Aernnova facilities in Spain, Britain, Portugal and Brazil.

Such programmes demonstrate how Indian aerospace manufacturers are becoming increasingly integrated into multinational supply chains rather than manufacturing exclusively for domestic aircraft programmes.

Exports of high-value aerostructures are particularly significant because they combine Indian manufacturing with stringent global aerospace quality standards and create specialised industrial skills that can also support future indigenous civil and military aircraft programmes.

Moving from Parts to Complex Aerostructures

The larger significance of the latest Airbus contract lies in the direction in which Mahindra Aerostructures is moving. The company is no longer limiting its ambitions to manufacturing individual aerospace parts. Its growing portfolio now spans precision components, sub-assemblies, fuselage skins and complete helicopter fuselage structures.

The A320-family contract will add another set of advanced industrial processes to this capability base. Chemical milling, precision forming, surface treatment and large-scale structural manufacturing are technologies that become increasingly important as a supplier progresses towards complete aircraft sections.

Airbus itself has described the contract as evidence of the precision-engineering capability available in India and as another step towards expanding the country’s role within its worldwide aerospace supply network.

With engineering work already underway and deliveries planned from 2028, the programme represents more than another export order for an Indian company. It adds high-value manufacturing processes to the country, integrates Bengaluru more deeply into the production chain of the A320neo and A321XLR, and advances Mahindra Aerostructures’ longer-term ambition of manufacturing progressively larger and more complex aircraft structures in India.
