India and Nepal have reviewed cooperation on border management, security and infrastructure during the 14th meeting of the India-Nepal Joint Working Group, held in Dehradun on 20–21 August 2026.

The Indian delegation was led by Pausumi Basu, Joint Secretary (BM-I), Ministry of Home Affairs, while the Nepali side was headed by Ananda Kafle, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs of Nepal.

Both sides discussed the full range of bilateral border-management issues and reaffirmed their commitment to stronger coordination between their respective security and administrative agencies.

Key areas of discussion included efforts to tackle trans-border crime and other criminal activities, improve the use of border infrastructure and strengthen connectivity through Integrated Check Posts, roads and railway networks.

The two delegations also reviewed issues related to the removal of encroachments and maintenance of boundary pillars, which remain important for effective management of the long and open India-Nepal border.

India and Nepal further exchanged views on improving institutional coordination and expanding capacity-building cooperation across relevant sectors. Both sides agreed to maintain regular engagement to address shared border-management challenges.

The next meeting of the Joint Working Group will be held in Nepal on a mutually convenient date.

The mechanism remains an important platform for India and Nepal to coordinate security, infrastructure and administrative issues along their shared border while facilitating legitimate movement and economic activity between the two countries.
