Kargil War Memorial Hosts Two-Day Tribute to Heroes of Operation Vijay

The Kargil War Memorial at Drass in Ladakh has been prepared for the national commemoration of the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas, with two days of solemn ceremonies, military displays and cultural programmes honouring the soldiers who fought in the 1999 Kargil War.

The commemorative events began on July 25, 2026, with veterans, families of fallen soldiers, serving military personnel, senior Army officers and dignitaries gathering in the mountainous region where some of the fiercest battles of Operation Vijay were fought. Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed every year on July 26 to commemorate India’s victory and remember the extraordinary courage displayed by the Armed Forces while reclaiming strategic heights occupied by Pakistani troops and infiltrators.

The opening programme, known as Yudh Sansmaran, was organised at the Lamochen View Point overlooking the battlefield. A documentary on Operation Vijay and a special presentation recounting the acts of courage of 40 war heroes were screened during the ceremony. Veterans shared their memories of the conflict, while family members spoke about the soldiers whose courage and sacrifice became part of India’s military history.

The next of kin of fallen personnel were felicitated during the programme. The gathering brought together those who had fought in the war, the families who had endured personal loss and the military personnel responsible for preserving the legacy of Operation Vijay.

The afternoon programme, titled Gauravmay Sanskriti, was held at Vishwanathan Stadium. It featured patriotic performances by the Ladakh Scouts Regimental Centre Band and a precision motorcycle display by the Shwet Ashwa team of the Corps of Military Police Centre and School.

Students presented a National Integration Dance, reflecting the cultural diversity and unity of India. The programme also highlighted the Indian Army’s increasing use of advanced technologies for operations in high-altitude and difficult terrain. The event was followed by Vijay Bhoj, which brought together veterans, serving personnel, dignitaries and the families of war heroes in an atmosphere of remembrance and solidarity.

The evening’s Shaurya Sandhya ceremony at the Kargil War Memorial was dedicated to the memory of those who made the supreme sacrifice. A ceremonial urn containing Veeron Ki Mitti was presented to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Interfaith prayers were offered, followed by the Beating Retreat ceremony and the National Anthem.

The Defence Minister also lit lamps at the memorial as a tribute to the personnel who lost their lives during the conflict. Addressing the gathering on the eve of Kargil Vijay Diwas, he said the courage, patriotism and determination displayed by Indian soldiers under extremely difficult conditions continued to inspire the Armed Forces and the entire nation.

The main Shradhanjali Samaroh will be held on July 26 at the Kargil War Memorial. Rajnath Singh will lead the nation in paying homage by laying a wreath at the memorial’s cenotaph. He is also scheduled to inaugurate a Virtual Walkthrough Portal, address the gathering and interact with Veer Naris and Veer Matas.

The programme will include a visit to Sando Top and an operational-capability demonstration by the Indian Army at Matayen. The demonstration is expected to highlight the Army’s preparedness, equipment and ability to operate in the demanding high-altitude environment of the Kargil region.

The Defence Minister will also participate in the culmination of the Shaurya Vijay Yatra, a commemorative motorcycle expedition that began at the National War Memorial in New Delhi on July 14. The 28 riders, comprising serving and retired defence personnel and members of their families, covered approximately 1,900 kilometres over 13 days before reaching Drass.

During the journey, the expedition paid tribute at several military memorials, including the Chandimandir War Memorial, Rezang La War Memorial and Leh War Memorial. The riders carried an urn containing soil from the National War Memorial to be offered at Kargil in memory of the fallen soldiers. The expedition was organised under the theme “One Ride, One Nation, One Salute.”

Several additional activities were organised across Ladakh ahead of the anniversary. These included a trek to Tiger Hill, commemorative journeys to Point 5140, visits by ex-servicemen and students to war memorials, military equipment exhibitions and motorcycle expeditions across the high mountain passes of the region.

These programmes were intended to connect younger generations with the history of the conflict while recognising the courage, discipline and determination demonstrated by Indian troops.

Located beneath the peaks where the battles were fought, the Kargil War Memorial serves as a permanent reminder of the cost of defending the nation’s frontiers. Its sandstone walls carry the names of the fallen, while the surrounding mountains provide a direct visual connection to the battlefields of Tololing, Tiger Hill and other strategic positions.

The 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas is therefore more than an anniversary of a military victory. It is a national expression of gratitude to the soldiers who fought under extreme conditions and to the families who continue to preserve their memory. Through ceremonies at Drass and commemorative programmes across the country, the legacy of Operation Vijay continues to inspire the values of courage, duty, sacrifice and service to the nation.
