Wang Yi Meets Prime Minister Modi, Calls for Stronger India-China Cooperation

During the interaction, Wang said China is prepared to implement the important understanding reached between the leaders of the two countries and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation. He emphasised that India and China, as two of the world’s largest developing countries and major voices of the Global South, have a responsibility to work together in support of stability, development and self-reliance among developing nations.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and conveyed Beijing’s readiness to work with India to strengthen trust, manage sensitive issues and sustain the recent positive momentum in bilateral relations. The meeting took place during Wang’s visit to India in connection with the BRICS National Security Advisors meeting.

China’s Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, shared details of the meeting through a social media post, saying that Wang highlighted the importance of enhancing mutual trust, clearing doubts and handling sensitive matters properly. He said stronger India-China cooperation would serve the fundamental interests of both peoples and meet the wider expectations of the international community.

The Chinese side also expressed support for India’s role as the rotating chair of BRICS and said Beijing is ready to work with New Delhi to promote progress within the grouping. With BRICS gaining greater relevance in global economic and strategic discussions, cooperation between India and China within the platform is being viewed as an important part of wider Global South engagement.

Wang also held talks with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on the sidelines of the BRICS National Security Advisors meeting. The two sides reviewed recent developments in India-China relations and noted the progress made towards gradual normalisation. The discussions covered the need to build confidence, guide public understanding and maintain the broader direction of bilateral engagement.

The border issue remained an important part of the discussion. Wang said the matter should be placed in an appropriate position so that it does not affect the overall development of bilateral relations. He also stressed the need to respect each other’s core interests and manage sensitive issues with care.

India and China have seen a cautious phase of engagement in recent months, with both sides seeking to stabilise ties after a prolonged period of strain. The latest meeting signals an effort to keep diplomatic channels active, maintain dialogue and identify areas where cooperation can continue despite existing differences.

The presence of Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong and other senior officials at the meeting reflected the importance attached to the engagement by both sides. The discussions come at a time when India and China are also navigating wider global challenges, including economic uncertainty, shifting supply chains and the growing role of the Global South in international affairs.

The meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Wang Yi adds momentum to the ongoing process of rebuilding communication between the two Asian neighbours. While sensitive issues remain, both sides appear focused on keeping relations stable, expanding areas of practical cooperation and using multilateral platforms such as BRICS to advance shared interests.
