Taiwan-based semiconductor major MediaTek has expanded its India footprint with the launch of a new research and development centre in Noida, marking another important step in India’s rise as a global hub for chip design, electronics innovation and high-technology engineering. The new facility is located at BPTP Capital City in Sector 94, Noida, and spans around 1.04 lakh square feet.
The new Noida R&D centre will support MediaTek’s efforts to expand its engineering talent base and strengthen its research capabilities in India. The company said the facility will work along with its existing Bengaluru operations to accelerate innovation in semiconductor technologies and advanced chip design solutions.
MediaTek’s expansion comes at a time when India is pushing aggressively to build a stronger semiconductor ecosystem, covering chip design, electronics manufacturing, research, talent development and digital infrastructure. For a global chip company such as MediaTek, India offers a large technology workforce, a fast-growing consumer electronics market and a rapidly expanding digital economy.
The company has taken the Noida facility on a long-term lease, with the total transaction value estimated at around ₹144 crore, or about US$16 million, over 10 years. The scale and duration of the lease indicate MediaTek’s long-term commitment to India as a strategic engineering and innovation base, rather than merely a sales or market-support location.
Noida’s emergence as a technology and commercial hub is also an important part of the story. Industry experts have noted that the city is seeing rising demand for Grade-A office spaces, supported by better infrastructure, connectivity and its proximity to the upcoming Jewar International Airport. This makes the region increasingly attractive for technology companies, electronics firms and global capability centres.
For India, the expansion by MediaTek strengthens the country’s position in the global semiconductor value chain. While semiconductor manufacturing often receives the most public attention, chip design and R&D are equally critical areas where India already has deep engineering strengths. The addition of another major R&D centre by a leading global semiconductor player reinforces India’s role as a destination for advanced technology development.
The development also fits into the larger Make in India and Digital India narrative. As India works to reduce dependence on imported electronics and build domestic capability in high-value technology sectors, investments in semiconductor research, embedded systems, chip design and electronics engineering become essential. MediaTek’s Noida centre adds momentum to this shift by bringing more advanced technology work into the Indian ecosystem.
MediaTek’s latest expansion therefore represents more than a real estate or corporate growth announcement. It reflects India’s growing importance in global semiconductor innovation, the strengthening of Noida as a technology hub, and the rising confidence of international companies in India’s engineering talent. As the country continues to build its semiconductor and electronics ecosystem, such R&D investments could become a key driver of long-term technology competitiveness.
