xternal Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar joined Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar in presenting Made-in-India laptops to schoolchildren, marking another education-linked initiative in India’s growing partnership with the Caribbean nation. DD News reported that the handover fulfilled a commitment made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Trinidad and Tobago last year.
The ceremony was held during Jaishankar’s official visit to Trinidad and Tobago from May 8 to 9, 2026. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the first set of 2,000 laptops was handed over to selected schoolchildren in the presence of Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar. The initiative was presented as a message of learning, awareness and opportunity, showing how India’s development cooperation is increasingly extending into education and digital access.
The laptop handover carries both educational and diplomatic significance. For Trinidad and Tobago’s students, the devices can help improve access to digital learning, online educational material and technology-based classroom support. For India, the initiative highlights the growing role of Made-in-India technology in global development partnerships, especially with countries that share historical, cultural and people-to-people links with India.
The event formed part of a broader diplomatic engagement between the two countries. During the visit, India and Trinidad and Tobago reviewed the announcements made during Prime Minister Modi’s July 2025 visit and concluded agreements in areas such as tourism, renewable energy, development cooperation and traditional medicine. The two sides also advanced cooperation in solarisation projects, quick-impact development initiatives and an Ayurveda Chair.
Jaishankar’s visit also included meetings with senior leaders of Trinidad and Tobago, including Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar, the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives. He was also welcomed at the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago, underlining the political warmth behind the bilateral relationship.
The education initiative stands out because it combines India’s diplomatic outreach with practical support for young learners. Rather than remaining limited to high-level agreements, the laptop handover shows how bilateral cooperation can directly reach classrooms and students. It also reinforces India’s image as a partner offering development support through technology, capacity building and shared educational opportunity.
