India, Austria Deepen Defence and Technology Partnership

Highlighting the wider significance of the talks, the Prime Minister said the visit would bring fresh momentum to trade and investment ties. He underlined that Austria’s strengths in advanced engineering and technology could complement India’s scale and speed, helping create more reliable technology partnerships and supply chains.

India and Austria have agreed to expand cooperation across defence, semiconductors, quantum technology and biotechnology, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker held talks in New Delhi on April 16, 2026. Modi described the visit as especially significant, noting that it was the first visit by an Austrian Chancellor to India in four decades and said the two countries were entering a “new era” in bilateral relations.

Highlighting the wider significance of the talks, the Prime Minister said the visit would bring fresh momentum to trade and investment ties. He underlined that Austria’s strengths in advanced engineering and technology could complement India’s scale and speed, helping create more reliable technology partnerships and supply chains. Modi said the two sides would strengthen cooperation in defence, semiconductors, quantum technology and biotechnology, placing future-focused sectors at the centre of the relationship.

The leaders also stressed the strong base already built through infrastructure and engineering cooperation. Modi pointed to Austria’s role in projects such as the Delhi Metro and the Atal Tunnel, and said Austrian firms had contributed to railway works, ropeway infrastructure, clean energy and urban development projects in India. These partnerships, he said, showed that the two countries had already developed a dependable record of collaboration in innovation, sustainability and infrastructure.

Education, research and talent mobility also emerged as important pillars of the talks. Modi said India and Austria would deepen cooperation in engineering and technical education, citing the MoU signed between IIT Delhi and Austria’s Montan University as a strong example of knowledge exchange. He also announced that the two countries would expand collaboration in research, startups and youth exchange, including the launch of an India-Austria Working Holiday Programme.

On mobility and workforce cooperation, the Prime Minister said India’s talent could contribute significantly to Austria’s innovation ecosystem and productivity. He noted that the migration and mobility agreement signed in 2023 would now be expanded to include opportunities in the nursing sector, adding another practical dimension to the bilateral partnership.

The two sides also used the occasion to underline common positions on global challenges. Modi said India and Austria agreed that military conflict could not resolve present international crises and voiced support for stable, sustainable and lasting peace in regions such as Ukraine and West Asia. He added that reform of global institutions and a shared commitment to combating terrorism were also part of the emerging India-Austria understanding.
