India, Bangladesh Review Defence Cooperation and Broader Bilateral Ties

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, both sides exchanged views on regional and global developments while exploring ways to deepen cooperation between the two neighbours. Jaishankar reiterated India’s desire to engage constructively with the new government in Dhaka and to further strengthen the bilateral relationship.

India and Bangladesh have held fresh high-level talks aimed at strengthening bilateral ties, with discussions covering defence cooperation, regional developments and wider engagement across key sectors. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman in New Delhi on April 9, with Bangladesh Prime Minister’s Adviser on Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir also present during the meeting.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, both sides exchanged views on regional and global developments while exploring ways to deepen cooperation between the two neighbours. Jaishankar reiterated India’s desire to engage constructively with the new government in Dhaka and to further strengthen the bilateral relationship.

A significant part of the talks focused on security and defence ties. The two sides reviewed their existing defence cooperation architecture, including bilateral consultation mechanisms, training exchanges, capacity-building initiatives and institutional exchanges between defence establishments. The discussion indicates that defence ties remain an important pillar of the India-Bangladesh relationship, alongside diplomacy, connectivity and economic engagement. That final point is an inference based on the issues highlighted in the official summary.

The meeting also fits into a broader phase of renewed contact between the two countries. DD News reported that Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma had earlier called on Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, where both sides discussed expanding engagement and cooperation across major sectors. Taken together, the recent exchanges suggest that New Delhi and Dhaka are working to maintain momentum in a relationship that remains strategically important for regional stability and neighbourhood diplomacy. The last sentence is an inference based on the sequence of recent bilateral meetings reported by DD News.
