Launch of Paperless Licensing for Petroleum Service Stations

India Assures Energy Security Amid Rising Tensions in the Middle East

To ensure real-time monitoring of the situation, the government has also established a 24×7 control room that continuously tracks the availability and distribution of petroleum products across the country. The control centre monitors supply chains, stock levels, and logistics movements, enabling authorities to respond quickly if market conditions change.

Amid escalating hostilities in the Middle East and concerns over potential disruptions to global energy markets, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has assured that India remains well prepared to handle any short-term supply challenges. Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri briefed the media on the government’s preparedness, stating that India’s energy supply system remains robust and resilient despite the evolving geopolitical situation.

India today occupies a significant position in the global energy landscape. The country is the third-largest importer of crude oil, the fourth-largest oil refiner, and the fifth-largest exporter of petroleum products worldwide. According to the government, adequate stocks of crude oil and refined petroleum products—including petrol, diesel, and aviation turbine fuel (ATF)—are currently available to manage any short-term disruptions that may arise due to instability in the Middle East.

Officials emphasised that India’s strategy of diversifying its energy sources in recent years has strengthened the country’s energy security. By expanding its procurement network across multiple regions and suppliers, India has reduced its dependence on a single route or supplier. In particular, Indian energy companies now have access to crude shipments that do not pass through the strategically sensitive Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil transit chokepoints. These alternative supply routes are expected to help offset any potential disruptions affecting shipments passing through the Gulf region.

To ensure real-time monitoring of the situation, the government has also established a 24×7 control room that continuously tracks the availability and distribution of petroleum products across the country. The control centre monitors supply chains, stock levels, and logistics movements, enabling authorities to respond quickly if market conditions change.

The Ministry indicated that India is currently in a comfortable position in terms of both crude oil reserves and refined fuel inventories. The government remains focused on safeguarding the interests of Indian consumers by maintaining stable supply and minimising any potential impact on domestic fuel availability.

While global energy markets remain volatile due to geopolitical tensions, the government expressed cautious optimism that the country’s diversified supply network, strong refining capacity, and adequate stockpiles will help manage the situation effectively. Authorities have also indicated that phased measures could be implemented if required to further stabilise the domestic energy market.

The briefing highlights India’s broader strategy of strengthening energy resilience through diversification, strategic stockpiling, and continuous monitoring—measures that aim to protect the country’s energy security even during periods of global uncertainty.
