Recently at the World Economic Forum at Davos, on January 2020, multi-billionaire leftist, George Soros lamented, “Nationalism, far from being reversed, made further headway. The biggest and most frightening setback occurred in India where a democratically elected Narendra Modi is creating a Hindu nationalist state imposing punitive measures on Kashmir, a semi-autonomous Muslim region and threatening to deprive millions of Muslims of their citizenship.” (George Soros laments rising nationalism, says biggest setback in India, in The Times of India, January 25, 2020). World Economic Forum is an NGO and Davos is a mountain resort in Graubünden, in the eastern Alps region of Switzerland.
To understand the current attempt of Soros to intervene in Bharat’s security issues, internal affairs and academics, one has to understand the many intrusions and dominations this Communist millionaire made in the domestic affairs and research foundations in other countries.
After the formal treaty disintegrating the former USSR was signed at Belovezhskaya Puschcha on December 8, 1991, George Soros stepped in. As early as 1993, Soros announced that he was setting up a new foundation with hundred million dollars of his personal wealth to support basic research and science education in the Former Soviet Union (FSU). Designated as the International Science Foundation for FSU, the new fund was designed to provide emergency relief for researchers and try to reverse the brain drain of scientists to the west. Soros dubbed his new foundation ‘Noah’s Ark’, meant to rescue the scientific community.
Boris Saltykov, the Russian Minister of Science and Technology, told media in Moscow that the proposed funding procedures by Soros are certain to shake up traditional science establishment in FSU. ‘It shall select only the most creative people, leading to a shift in power from the apparatchiks to the scientists themselves’, he added. (Soros Fund Launches ‘Noah’s Ark’ with $100 Million for Science in FSU, Physics Today, Jan. 1993). Soros thus established the International Science Foundation (ISF) with a grant of $100 million to support basic science and scientists in New York and Moscow.
In 2015, Russia branded the NGOs run by George Soros, including the Open Society Foundations (OSF), a threat to the country’s constitutional order and banned them from disbursing grants to Russian partners (Russia bans two Soros foundations from disbursing grants, The Guardian, November 30, 2015). It said the activity of Soros, Open Society Foundation and Open Society Institute Assistance Foundation represent a threat to the foundations of the Russian Federation and the security of the state.
“Any left-wing group of any consequence at all is getting Soros money,” said Scott Walter, president of the Capital Research Center. “In my decades of studying left-wing groups, I almost never find a group that lacks funding from Soros”. Soros has been a key funder through his OSF for a left-wing network of protest groups, including the Center for Popular Democracy (George Soros-funded network drives anti-Kavanaugh activism, The Washington Times, October 8, 2018).
To understand the intervention of Soros in global academics, it is necessary to decode his association with the evangelical groups. The reports say, “there is evidence that the progressive evangelical organisation ‘Sojourners’, headed by Jim Wallis, had received grants from the Open Society Institute, the foundation of left-wing billionaire George Soros. (Soros Funding of Sojourners Is Only the Tip of the Iceberg, National Review, August 25, 2010).
George Soros’ Open Society Policy Center made massive donations to two faith-based organisations -Pacific Institute for Community Organisation (PICO) and Faith in Public Life (FPL) -which also ran activist grassroots networks. (Soros’ Catholic useful idiots, The Washington Times, August 30, 2016). A recent report from the American Association of Evangelicals reveals how Soros, through his many funding ventures, has been busily infiltrating the Christian base in America to divide, and ultimately conquer, the religious minded cadre within the Republican Party. (George Soros and his ‘rented evangelicals’ outed by Christian leaders, The Washington Times, October 22, 2018).
Soros is not a recent interlocutor in shaping the alliance between communism and the church. Raphael Samuel in his study of British Marxist historians from 1880 to 1980, describes the commitment of communists to ‘missionary’ work and narrates how communism became a ‘crusading order’ and put forward a complete scheme of social salvation. In the Christian-Marxist dialogues, prominent participants from the Marxist side were R. Garaudy, V. Gardavsky, M. Machovec and E. Bloch. Christian theologians included H. Hromadka, A. Dumas, G. Girardi, K. Rahner, J. Bentley and J.M. Gonzalez-Ruiz.
Central European University (CEU), which opened in Budapest, Hungary, in 1991, was founded by George Soros after the collapse of the Soviet Union, as an alternative recruitment and training centre for left intellectuals. He gave the university an $880 million endowment, making it one of the wealthiest in Europe. The CEU has been forced out of Hungary by PM Viktor Orbán’s government, who accused Soros of funding a ‘Soros plan’ to erase national identities and increase migration flows to Europe (University founded by George Soros ‘forced out’ of Hungary, The Guardian, October 25, 2018). According to a transcript of his speech, Soros called the legal battle with Orbán’s government ‘an epic struggle against a repressive regime’, a phrase commonly used by left groups. (Soros-founded university opens new Vienna campus after Hungary forces it out, The Times of Israel, November 16, 2019).
Earlier in 2015, a think tank backed by George Soros strongly expressed to increase its presence in India, according to Robert Johnson, president of the Institute New Economic Thinking (I-Net). I-Net is already working with the Azim Premji University in Bengaluru since 2012 to conduct joint workshops and seminars on Indian development issues (George Soros-backed I-Net wants to increase India presence, Livemint, January 13, 2015).
The CEU launched its ambitious plan in Kerala in collaboration with Kerala Council for Historical Research (KCHR) under a left government. Prof. Istvan Perczel from CEU is a scholar on Byzantine history and Medieval Christianity, and one of the patrons of the dubious Pattanam excavations in Kerala, supervised by left historians under KCHR. Prof. Perczel delivered a lecture at Thiruvananthapuram on the historical legacy of Kerala Christianity (History of Kerala Christianity: Documents, monuments and methodological challenges, The Hindu, February 12, 2008). Formerly he sent a letter to KCHR giving his benediction and highlighting, “According to tradition, Musiris was also the port where the apostle St. Thomas landed, and the epics of indigenous south Indian Christianity started. This discovery opens immense new perspectives for the scholarship, so I wish all success for continuation”. (Muziris Heritage Project-Pattanam Excavations, 2008, KCHR, Thiruvananthapuram).
Istvan Perczel under Central European University sponsors the Biblical project, History of Kerala Christianity on the Basis of Newly Found Documents: Methodological Challenges and Possible Answers (Talk at the IIS Centre for Contemporary Studies, July 24, 2008). The work is carried out by an Indian NGO registered in Kerala, Association for the Preservation of the Saint Thomas Christian Heritage, in close collaboration with the Marxist sponsored Kerala Council of Historical Research. Istvan Perczel is a founding member of this NGO who is also honoured with Distinguished Visiting Professorship (three lectures) at Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, Kerala, by the current Left government in Kerala.
Pattanam is currently linked with Keezhadi archaeological site in Tamil Nadu, excavated by ASI, but virtually controlled by Father Gasper Raj. He is also involved in multiple activities in support of LTTE, a Sri Lankan group designated by the US State Department as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation. (Douglas C. Lovelace Jr., Esq., 2008, Terrorism: Documents of International and Local Control, Academic, OUP, Vol. 91).
Currently, the Archaeological Survey of India( henceforth ASI) under Union Ministry of Culture has granted a license to P.J.Cherian’s NGO PAMA to excavate Pattanam and Mathilakam in Ernakulam and Thrissur districts of Kerala as part of its Ancient Tamilakam project. (Rediscovering Ancient Tamilakam: Pattanam and Mathilakam Excavations to begin soon, in Times of India, January 27, 2020) . Is the ASI aware that they have granted a license to an NGO to excavate a site, patronised by George Soros who has recently attacked the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modiji on CAA and Kashmir issues? Even, former Indian President, Pranab Mukherjee, in February 2016, cancelled his visit to inaugurate an exhibition of archaeological artefacts at Pattanam which was part of the then Muziris Heritage Project. Now the same group have camouflaged the dubious Pattanam and relaunched it under the new ‘Ancient Tamilakam Project’ involving Keezhadi, controlled by LTTE patron Father Gasper Raj.
As the LTTE is still active and hence will remain banned as an unlawful association until May 2024 under Section 3 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967, we have to be alert about the Sooorrros plan in Bharat and the lobbyists who are associated with them.
