ndia and Cyprus have reviewed progress under their Joint Action Plan as both sides step up preparations for Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides’ visit to India scheduled for May 2026. The latest review took place in Nicosia when India’s High Commissioner to Cyprus, Manish, called on President Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace, with discussions focused on key deliverables and the next phase of bilateral cooperation.
According to the Indian Embassy’s update carried by News On AIR, the two sides placed particular emphasis on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, innovation and connectivity, while also assessing progress in sectors such as defence and security, renewable energy, digital transformation, fintech and maritime cooperation. They also stressed stronger academic, cultural and people-to-people exchanges, alongside closer coordination in multilateral forums, including engagement linked to the European Union.
The review is part of a broader diplomatic roadmap that took shape after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Cyprus in June 2025, when the two countries elevated ties through a comprehensive partnership framework and agreed to prepare a five-year Action Plan to guide bilateral relations from 2025 to 2029. That framework identified strategic sectors including technology, innovation, digital infrastructure, mobility, tourism and stronger economic engagement as priority areas for sustained cooperation.
Momentum was further reinforced in October 2025, when Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos visited India and held delegation-level talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. During that visit, both sides reviewed implementation of the Joint Action Plan and expressed satisfaction with progress across trade and investment, defence and security, maritime affairs, technology and innovation, tourism, culture and people-to-people ties.
The renewed engagement also carries wider strategic significance. During the June 2025 summit, both countries agreed to deepen cooperation in cyber and maritime security, promote fintech, startups, AI, mobility and connectivity, and strengthen business links through the India-Greece-Cyprus Business and Investment Council. The two sides also discussed the potential of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) and reaffirmed cooperation on wider regional and multilateral issues, giving the partnership a stronger geopolitical and economic dimension.
The latest Nicosia meeting therefore is more than a routine diplomatic courtesy. It signals that India and Cyprus are now moving from broad declarations to implementation, with the upcoming presidential visit to India expected to provide the next major push to a relationship that is increasingly expanding beyond traditional goodwill into trade, security, technology and regional connectivity.
