India has achieved a significant milestone in expanding its social welfare network, with more than one billion citizens now covered under the country’s social protection framework.
According to Union Minister for Labour and Employment Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, social protection coverage has risen sharply from 19 per cent in 2015 to 68.4 per cent in 2026. In a post on social media, the minister said the achievement reflects the government’s commitment to the vision of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas”, ensuring that the benefits of welfare programmes reach a larger section of the population.
The expansion has been driven by a range of government initiatives focused on strengthening financial security, improving access to healthcare, and providing food support to vulnerable communities. These schemes have contributed to enhancing the quality of life for millions of people while supporting efforts to reduce poverty and improve social security.
The milestone highlights India’s continued efforts to build a more inclusive social protection system, extending welfare benefits to a broader population and reinforcing economic resilience across the country.
