Mega Science: CERN has 400 Indian Scientists

“There are 18,000 scientists, belonging to 111 nationalities at CERN, and 400 of them are from India. Most of these 400 are from institutes within India, while some also come through affiliations of other premier institutes from across the world, mostly the US,” Gianotti said.

“Made In India” Written All Over “Little Sun” Being Created In France

Having committed about Rs. 17,500 crores, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took stock of this mega project on his recently concluded trip to France. India, by contributing to about ten per cent of the cost, gets access to one hundred per cent of technology. This is the most expensive mega-science effort India is participating in and globally ITER is the most expensive science project on Earth ever to be undertaken in the 21st century. The total weight of the ITER reactor will be about 28,000 tonnes.

New Materials may Help Conversion of Heat into Electricity- Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi

The new work is based on tapping what is called the ‘Seebeck Effect’. It is a phenomenon in which temperature difference between two dissimilar electrical conductors or semiconductors produces a voltage difference between the substances. When heat is applied to one of the two conductors or semiconductors, heated electrons flow toward the cooler one. If the pair is connected through an electrical circuit, direct current flows through that circuit.
