Bharat Dynamics Targets ₹5,500 Crore FY27 Revenue as Missile Order Book Crosses ₹26,000 Crore

Bharat Dynamics Limited is preparing for a sharp expansion in production during FY2026-27, with the defence public sector undertaking targeting revenue of around ₹5,500 crore as it executes a substantial missile and weapon-systems order book.

BDL, the Ministry of Defence enterprise responsible for manufacturing several of India’s guided missile and allied weapon systems, closed FY2025-26 with an order book of about ₹26,176 crore. The scale of the backlog provides the company with significant production visibility as it accelerates deliveries to the Indian Armed Forces and expands its manufacturing capacity.

BDL Enters FY27 With ₹26,176 Crore Order Book

Bharat Dynamics received new orders worth approximately ₹5,909 crore during FY2025-26, further strengthening an already sizeable backlog of defence programmes.

The ₹26,176 crore order book spans missile systems, underwater weapons and associated defence equipment. It reflects sustained procurement by the Indian Armed Forces as India expands domestic production of precision-guided weapons under the broader push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

BDL occupies a specialised position within this ecosystem. Established in 1970 as a Government of India enterprise under the Ministry of Defence, the company was created as the manufacturing base for guided missile systems and allied equipment for the Armed Forces. Its portfolio has since expanded across surface-to-air missiles, anti-tank guided missiles, air-to-air weapons, underwater systems and countermeasure technologies.

₹5,500 Crore Revenue Target Signals Major Production Ramp-Up

BDL is targeting approximately ₹5,500 crore in revenue during FY2026-27, representing a substantial increase over its FY2025-26 revenue from operations of around ₹2,441.79 crore.

Achieving that level would require a significant acceleration in programme execution and deliveries. The company has been investing in additional manufacturing capacity, automation and new production facilities to support the increasing volume and technological complexity of its order book.

For a missile manufacturer, scaling production involves more than simply increasing assembly rates. Guided weapons require precision mechanical components, propulsion systems, seekers, guidance electronics, warheads, control systems and rigorous testing before delivery. Higher production therefore depends on coordinated expansion across BDL and its domestic supplier network.

FY26 Profit Reaches ₹420 Crore

Bharat Dynamics reported profit after tax of approximately ₹420.34 crore for FY2025-26. The financial performance came as the company continued to invest in capacity enhancement and development of future weapon systems.

The combination of a large order book and rising production requirements places BDL at the centre of India’s effort to increase indigenous missile availability while progressively reducing reliance on imported systems and components.

Its current manufacturing portfolio includes systems developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation as well as weapons produced through technology partnerships and licensed production arrangements.

R&D Spending Gains Importance

BDL has also been increasing its emphasis on research and development as it moves beyond its traditional role as a production agency.

The company has been building capabilities in areas including seekers, propulsion, guidance, countermeasure systems, underwater weapons and new-generation missile technologies. Greater internal R&D capacity allows BDL to participate earlier in the development cycle and contribute to product evolution rather than limiting its role to series manufacture.

This shift is important as India’s defence industry increasingly moves towards indigenous ownership of complete weapon systems and critical subsystems.

BDL’s engineering and development programmes are also intended to complement technologies transferred by organisations such as DRDO, creating a broader domestic ecosystem capable of maintaining, upgrading and eventually exporting Indian missile systems.

Missile Manufacturing Capacity Expands Across India

Bharat Dynamics operates major manufacturing facilities at Hyderabad, Bhanur and Visakhapatnam and has been expanding its industrial footprint to accommodate future programmes.

Its Visakhapatnam unit is particularly important for underwater weapons, including torpedoes. BDL has also established new facilities and production lines aimed at supporting missile programmes expected to enter larger-scale manufacturing over the coming years.

The company’s expansion reflects the growing requirement for sustained production rather than limited batches of strategic weapons. Modern conflicts have demonstrated the importance of maintaining adequate stocks of precision-guided munitions, while India’s military modernisation programmes are simultaneously creating demand across multiple missile categories.

Domestic Suppliers Become Increasingly Important

The growth of BDL’s order book also carries implications for India’s wider defence manufacturing supply chain.

Missile production depends on hundreds of specialised components, ranging from electronic assemblies and composites to actuators, cables, precision-machined structures and energetic materials. Increasing production therefore creates opportunities for Indian MSMEs and private defence companies supplying BDL.

The company has been pursuing indigenisation and vendor development as part of its production strategy, helping build a domestic industrial base around missile manufacturing.

A larger indigenous supply chain can improve production resilience while reducing exposure to foreign supply disruptions, particularly for systems expected to remain in service for decades.

Exports Add Another Growth Avenue

Bharat Dynamics has also been positioning itself for a larger role in India’s expanding defence exports.

Indian-made missile systems are attracting increasing international attention as New Delhi promotes domestically manufactured defence equipment to friendly countries. BDL’s manufacturing base provides India with an established industrial platform capable of supporting export production alongside requirements from the Indian Armed Forces.

Export orders would further diversify the company’s production base while allowing Indian missile technologies to achieve greater scale.

BDL Moves Into a Higher Production Phase

The combination of a ₹26,176 crore order book, approximately ₹5,909 crore in fresh FY26 orders and a ₹5,500 crore FY27 revenue target indicates that Bharat Dynamics is moving into a considerably higher production phase.

The company is simultaneously expanding manufacturing capacity, strengthening indigenous supply chains and increasing its focus on research and development. These efforts are transforming BDL from a conventional missile production PSU into a broader guided-weapons and defence-technology enterprise.

With Indian missile programmes entering larger production runs and domestic defence procurement continuing to emphasise indigenous systems, Bharat Dynamics now has a substantial pipeline supporting its next stage of growth. Its expanding production base and technology capabilities are also strengthening India’s ability to manufacture sophisticated guided weapons at scale within the country.
