Indian precision engineering and defence manufacturing company Balu Forge Industries Limited has achieved a significant milestone in its indigenous artillery ammunition manufacturing programme by successfully producing and securing quality approval for its 155 mm Extended Range Full Bore (ERFB) artillery shell. The development represents an important step towards serial deliveries of the large-calibre ammunition component and follows the company’s earlier commercial orders for artillery shell manufacturing.
In a regulatory disclosure submitted to the Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange on November 2, Balu Forge confirmed that its 155 mm ERFB shell had successfully met specified manufacturing tolerances, including a forging Total Indicated Runout (TIR) tolerance of 3 mm and a machined wall tolerance of 0.3 mm. The company described the achievement as validation of its manufacturing processes and the technical capabilities of its production facilities.
The announcement also confirmed that Balu Forge has completed multiple dispatches of 152 mm empty artillery shells against previously secured orders. While these deliveries demonstrate progress in executing the company’s existing defence order book, serial dispatches of the newly approved 155 mm ERFB shells are expected to commence shortly.
Precision Manufacturing Milestone for 155 mm Artillery Shells
The successful production and quality approval of the 155 mm ERFB shell marks a further stage in Balu Forge’s development of large-calibre artillery components. Manufacturing such products requires controlled forging processes, precision machining, metallurgical expertise and consistent quality inspection to ensure that finished components meet specified dimensional requirements.
The company reported achieving a forging Total Indicated Runout tolerance of 3 mm. Total Indicated Runout is a dimensional measurement used to assess variation in a component’s surface relative to a reference axis during rotation. Controlling this variation is important in precision manufacturing because it helps ensure that components conform to specified geometric requirements during subsequent machining and inspection.
Balu Forge also reported a machined wall tolerance of 0.3 mm for the approved shell. Maintaining specified wall dimensions is an important aspect of manufacturing large-calibre shell bodies, where consistency in component geometry and material distribution forms part of the production quality requirements.
The achievement demonstrates the company’s reported ability to manufacture 155 mm ERFB shell bodies within the specified dimensional tolerances. However, the quality approval concerns the manufactured shell component and should not be interpreted as confirmation that complete, explosive-filled artillery ammunition has entered operational service.
Serial Deliveries Expected Following Quality Approval
The November 2 announcement represents a continuation of Balu Forge’s earlier progress in manufacturing 155 mm artillery shell components. The company had previously announced commercial orders for ERFB artillery shells, establishing a foundation for expanding its involvement in the domestic and international ammunition manufacturing supply chain.
The latest quality approval marks an important development because it moves the programme beyond earlier production announcements towards preparation for serial dispatches. For defence component manufacturers, the transition from initial production to regular deliveries requires the ability to manufacture components consistently while maintaining customer-specified quality standards.
According to Balu Forge, serial dispatches of its newly approved 155 mm ERFB shells are expected to begin shortly. The company has not specified a firm commencement date or disclosed the volume of shells covered by the anticipated initial dispatches in its latest announcement.
The distinction between approval and delivery is important. While Balu Forge has confirmed that the 155 mm ERFB shell has passed the relevant quality approval process, the November disclosure does not establish that serial deliveries of this particular product have already commenced.
Deliveries of 152 mm Artillery Shells Already Underway
Alongside the 155 mm manufacturing milestone, Balu Forge confirmed multiple successful dispatches of 152 mm empty artillery shells against an order announced earlier. These deliveries demonstrate that the company has progressed from securing orders to executing them through actual production and shipment.
The 152 mm programme is significant because it provides evidence of the company’s ongoing participation in large-calibre artillery component manufacturing. Executing such orders requires coordination between production planning, raw material procurement, forging operations, machining, quality inspection and customer delivery requirements.
The completed dispatches also provide an operational foundation for Balu Forge’s wider defence manufacturing activities. Experience gained through recurring production and deliveries can support improvements in manufacturing consistency, production scheduling and supply-chain coordination.
Although the company has reported successful dispatches, its latest disclosure does not provide the precise number of 152 mm shells delivered or the financial value associated with the completed shipments.
Indigenous Manufacturing Capabilities Support Defence Supply Chains
Balu Forge’s latest achievement highlights the increasing participation of Indian private-sector engineering companies in specialised defence manufacturing. Large-calibre artillery shell production involves demanding industrial processes that require expertise in metallurgy, heavy forging, precision machining and dimensional quality control.
India’s efforts to strengthen domestic defence manufacturing have created opportunities for specialised companies to participate in the production of components and subsystems used by ammunition manufacturers and defence equipment suppliers. Developing these capabilities within the country can support greater supply-chain resilience and reduce dependence on overseas sources for selected manufactured components.
The transition towards domestic production also requires manufacturers to demonstrate consistent quality and the ability to meet contractual delivery obligations. Technical approvals therefore represent important milestones, although they must be followed by sustained production performance and successful execution of customer orders.
For Balu Forge, the approved 155 mm ERFB shell and ongoing 152 mm dispatches demonstrate progress across different stages of its artillery manufacturing programme. The developments strengthen its position as a supplier of precision-engineered components for defence applications while creating a foundation for further manufacturing activity.
Balu Forge Moves from Manufacturing Approval Towards Order Execution
The latest announcement reflects the company’s efforts to convert its existing defence manufacturing capabilities and order book into regular production and deliveries. The successful dispatch of 152 mm shells provides evidence of order execution, while the quality approval of the 155 mm ERFB shell establishes a basis for the next phase of its large-calibre artillery programme.
Balu Forge’s technical achievements are particularly relevant to India’s expanding private defence manufacturing ecosystem, where companies are increasingly required to demonstrate not only production capabilities but also repeatable manufacturing quality and reliable delivery performance.
The November 2 disclosure does not represent the launch of an entirely new 155 mm artillery shell programme. Instead, it records a subsequent manufacturing and approval milestone within an initiative that the company had already announced.
