Cumulative no of Houses Sanctioned Under PMAY(U) now more than 90 Lakhs

Government Approves 1.93 Lakh More Houses Under PMAY-Urban 2.0, Taking Total Sanctions to 20.80 Lakh

Housing Approvals Cover 11 States, with 97% of Sanctioned Homes Allotted in Women’s Names or Joint Ownership Under the Urban Housing Mission

The Government of India has approved more than 1.93 lakh additional houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0), taking the total number of houses sanctioned under the mission to 20.80 lakh.

The approvals were granted during the 10th meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC), held in New Delhi on October 16, 2026, under the chairmanship of Satendra Singh, Secretary, Department of Urban Development, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

The latest approvals cover 11 states and aim to expand affordable housing opportunities for eligible urban families belonging to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS). The Ministry also highlighted the programme’s emphasis on women’s homeownership, with 97% of sanctioned houses allotted in women’s names or under joint ownership.

Over 1.93 Lakh Houses Approved Across 11 States

The Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee approved additional houses under the Beneficiary-Led Construction (BLC) and Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP) components of PMAY-U 2.0.

Uttar Pradesh received the largest allocation of 73,182 houses, followed by Bihar with 52,866 houses. Telangana received approval for 18,120 houses, while West Bengal and Gujarat were allocated 16,559 and 14,290 houses, respectively.

The remaining approvals include 6,560 houses in Andhra Pradesh, 4,670 in Chhattisgarh, 3,116 in Karnataka, 3,126 in Odisha, 1,003 in Mizoram and 29 in Sikkim.

These approvals will support eligible families in constructing houses on their own land or obtaining homes through affordable housing projects developed with government assistance.

The latest sanctions bring the cumulative number of approved houses under PMAY-U 2.0 to 20.80 lakh, marking further progress towards the mission’s national housing objectives.

PMAY-Urban 2.0 Aims to Support One Crore Additional Families

Launched in September 2024, PMAY-U 2.0 aims to provide affordable housing assistance to one crore additional urban poor and middle-class families.

The scheme offers financial assistance of up to ₹2.50 lakh per eligible household for constructing or purchasing a permanent house, subject to the applicable scheme provisions.

It covers eligible families belonging to the Economically Weaker Section, Low Income Group and Middle Income Group categories, with annual household income eligibility extending up to ₹9 lakh.

PMAY-U 2.0 is designed to address different housing requirements, including individual house construction, affordable housing projects, rental accommodation and home loan interest subsidies.

The programme seeks to improve living conditions by making formal housing more accessible to families facing financial constraints in urban areas.

Four Components Address Different Urban Housing Requirements

PMAY-U 2.0 operates through four components designed to meet the varied housing needs of eligible urban households.

Under Beneficiary-Led Construction, eligible families can receive financial assistance to construct permanent houses on land they already own. This component supports households that possess land but require financial assistance to build suitable homes.

The Affordable Housing in Partnership component enables eligible beneficiaries to purchase houses developed through public or private housing projects. It supports the creation of affordable residential units through organised housing development.

The Affordable Rental Housing component focuses on expanding access to reasonably priced rental accommodation in urban areas, particularly for households that require housing without immediately purchasing a property.

Under the Interest Subsidy Scheme, eligible households can receive interest subsidies of up to ₹1.80 lakh on qualifying housing loans of up to ₹25 lakh.

Together, these components provide different pathways to affordable housing while accommodating variations in household income, land ownership and residential requirements.

Women Receive Ownership or Joint Ownership of 97% of Sanctioned Houses

A major achievement highlighted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is the programme’s emphasis on women’s property ownership.

According to official figures, 20.16 lakh of the 20.80 lakh houses sanctioned under PMAY-U 2.0, representing approximately 97%, have been allotted in women’s names or under joint ownership.

The policy aims to strengthen women’s financial security, improve their participation in household decision-making and provide greater stability through property ownership.

Homeownership can contribute to long-term economic security by giving women a recognised stake in an important household asset.

By prioritising ownership or co-ownership for women, PMAY-U 2.0 integrates affordable housing assistance with broader objectives of financial inclusion and women’s empowerment.

Housing Assistance Reaches Vulnerable and Underserved Communities

The Ministry also highlighted the programme’s efforts to extend affordable housing assistance to vulnerable and underserved sections of urban society.

Of the total houses sanctioned under PMAY-U 2.0, 1.81 lakh have been sanctioned for senior citizens, reflecting the importance of secure housing for elderly households.

The programme has sanctioned 3.61 lakh houses for Scheduled Caste beneficiaries, 1.06 lakh for Scheduled Tribe beneficiaries and 9.14 lakh for Other Backward Class beneficiaries.

These allocations support the mission’s objective of improving access to permanent housing among families facing economic and social disadvantages.

By facilitating access to formal residential accommodation, the scheme contributes to improved living conditions, household stability and long-term social development.

Government Calls for Faster Implementation and Project Monitoring

During the CSMC meeting, Secretary Satendra Singh emphasised the importance of coordination between the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, state governments, Union Territories and Urban Local Bodies.

He called for timely submission and processing of housing proposals, improved project monitoring and faster resolution of implementation-related difficulties.

States and Union Territories were encouraged to strengthen beneficiary identification, ensure compliance with scheme guidelines and accelerate construction activities under approved projects.

The Ministry also emphasised the need to expedite occupancy of already completed houses under the Affordable Housing in Partnership component.

Regular monitoring and cooperation between different levels of government will support the timely delivery of housing benefits and improve the effectiveness of the programme.

More Than 1.27 Crore Houses Sanctioned Under Urban Housing Missions

The Ministry reported that the combined achievements of PMAY-Urban and PMAY-Urban 2.0 have resulted in the sanctioning of more than 1.27 crore houses across India.

Of these, approximately 1.01 crore houses have already been completed, reflecting the scale of the government’s urban affordable housing programme.

The original PMAY-Urban mission, launched in 2015, laid the foundation for expanding affordable housing among economically weaker and lower-income urban households.

PMAY-U 2.0 builds upon this programme by extending housing assistance to another one crore eligible families and incorporating different mechanisms for construction, purchase, rental accommodation and home loan support.

The continued expansion of housing approvals supports the government’s broader objective of improving urban living standards and providing secure residential accommodation to eligible households.

Affordable Housing Supports Urban Development and Economic Security

Access to permanent housing plays an important role in improving household stability, living conditions and economic security.

A secure home provides families with a foundation for education, employment, healthcare access and participation in community life.

Affordable housing projects can also contribute to local economic activity by supporting demand for construction materials, skilled labour and associated services.

PMAY-U 2.0 combines housing assistance with a focus on inclusion, women’s ownership and coordination between central and state authorities.

The latest approvals across 11 states represent another step in extending these benefits to eligible urban families.

PMAY-Urban 2.0 Advances India’s Housing for All Mission

The approval of more than 1.93 lakh additional houses under PMAY-U 2.0 brings the mission’s cumulative sanctions to 20.80 lakh, strengthening India’s efforts to expand affordable urban housing.

The programme’s emphasis on women’s ownership, assistance to vulnerable communities and multiple housing support mechanisms reflects its comprehensive approach to meeting residential needs.

With more than 1.27 crore houses sanctioned and 1.01 crore completed under the two urban housing missions, India continues to expand access to permanent housing through government-supported programmes.

Continued coordination between the Centre, states and urban local bodies will help translate the latest approvals into completed homes, supporting the national objective of Housing for All and improving the quality of life of urban families.
