A Farmer Producer Organisation from Haryana has exported 24 tonnes of frozen food products to Canada with support from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, marking another step in linking Indian farmer groups directly with international markets.
The consignment was flagged off from Sonipat on October 1, 2026. It was exported by Aterna Foods Producer Company Limited and comprised 2,295 boxes of frozen products valued at CAD 35,140.
Frozen Vegetables and Ready-to-Eat Products Included in Shipment
The shipment included green peas, mixed vegetables, peas and carrots, sweet corn, samosas and other frozen food products.
The exporting unit received support from APEDA under its Financial Assistance Scheme. The initiative is intended to strengthen export infrastructure, improve market access and help Indian agricultural and processed food producers reach overseas buyers.
The shipment also reflects the growing role of value addition in agricultural exports. Processing and freezing can extend product shelf life, improve logistics flexibility and enable producers to access markets that would be difficult to serve with fresh produce alone.
FPO-Led Export Model Expands Farmer Access to Global Markets
The export is significant because it was undertaken through a Farmer Producer Organisation-led model.
FPOs allow farmers to aggregate produce, improve bargaining power and participate collectively in processing, packaging and marketing. When these organisations gain direct access to export markets, a larger share of value generated across the supply chain can potentially remain with producers.
APEDA has been working to connect FPOs and Farmer Producer Companies with exporters, buyers and overseas markets. Such linkages can help organised farmer groups move beyond the role of primary commodity suppliers and participate more actively in higher-value segments of the agricultural economy.
APEDA Highlights Higher Value Realisation for Producers
APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev congratulated the exporter and other stakeholders associated with the shipment.
He said direct exports by the FPO could improve value realisation for producers and also acknowledged the contribution of the National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management in supporting the initiative.
The export to Canada provides an additional market for Indian frozen food products and demonstrates how coordinated support involving farmer organisations, processing institutions and export agencies can build commercially viable international supply chains.
Processed Food Exports Support Agricultural Value Addition
India’s agricultural export strategy is increasingly incorporating processed and value-added products alongside traditional commodity exports.
Frozen vegetables and prepared foods offer opportunities to diversify India’s agricultural export basket while creating demand for processing, grading, storage, packaging and cold-chain services within the country.
For farmers, greater participation in such value chains can reduce dependence on local commodity markets and create additional channels for selling produce.
Haryana Export Strengthens India’s FPO-Based Export Ecosystem
APEDA, under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, continues to support the integration of farmer groups into global agricultural value chains through market linkages, export facilitation and financial assistance.
The Sonipat shipment shows how FPO-led processing and direct exports can convert agricultural production into higher-value international trade. Expanding such models across producing regions can strengthen farmer participation in exports while supporting India’s growing processed food industry.
