IAF’s Sarang Team Arrives in Egypt for El Alamein International Airshow 2026

The Indian Air Force’s Sarang Helicopter Display Team has arrived in Egypt with five indigenously designed and manufactured HAL Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopters to participate in the second edition of the El Alamein International Airshow, scheduled from 8 to 10 September 2026.

The helicopters and associated equipment were transported from Sarang’s home base at Sulur in Tamil Nadu to Egypt aboard Indian Air Force C-17 Globemaster III heavy-lift transport aircraft. The Dhruvs have since been offloaded in Egypt as the team begins preparations and practice flights ahead of the international display.

Five Dhruvs to Showcase Indian Aeronautical Capability

Sarang operates the HAL Advanced Light Helicopter Dhruv, one of India’s most important indigenous rotary-wing platforms. During the El Alamein Airshow, the team will demonstrate close-formation flying, coordinated manoeuvres and helicopter aerobatics designed to showcase both the precision of Indian Air Force pilots and the agility of the Dhruv.

The IAF describes Sarang as the world’s only helicopter aerobatic display team, with its brightly painted peacock-themed helicopters becoming a distinctive presence at major international aerospace events. The team operates five Dhruvs and has appeared at airshows in countries including Russia, the UAE, Bahrain and Singapore.

Unlike conventional fixed-wing aerobatic teams, Sarang performs complex formation changes and manoeuvres using helicopters, requiring exceptionally precise control of altitude, speed, spacing and rotorcraft movement.

Sarang Returns to Egypt After 2024 Debut

The 2026 appearance marks Sarang’s return to Egypt after participating in the inaugural Egyptian International Airshow in September 2024.

During that event, the Indian team similarly deployed five Dhruv helicopters to El Alamein, providing an international showcase for India’s indigenous helicopter programme. The Indian Embassy in Cairo lists Sarang’s 2024 participation among the important recent engagements between the Indian and Egyptian air forces.

The return two years later reflects the growing regularity of defence and military-aviation interaction between India and Egypt.

El Alamein Airshow Expands in Its Second Edition

The El Alamein International Airshow 2026 will be held at El Alamein International Airport under Egyptian government and military sponsorship. The event brings together air forces, aerospace manufacturers, defence companies, civil-aviation organisations and space-sector participants from different countries.

Alongside flying demonstrations, the three-day event will feature static aircraft displays, aerospace and defence exhibitions and industry engagements. A dedicated Aerospace Future Technology Symposium is scheduled for 7 September, a day before the main airshow begins.

Egypt has positioned the event as a major aerospace platform connecting markets across Africa, the Middle East and Europe, making participation useful not only for military diplomacy but also for international aerospace visibility.

Dhruv Serves as a Flying Showcase for Indian Aerospace

Sarang’s international appearances have an important industrial dimension because every performance also places the HAL Dhruv before military delegations and aerospace professionals from other countries.

Designed and manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, the Dhruv is a twin-engine multi-role helicopter that has been developed in several configurations for the Indian armed forces and other users. The platform has been adapted for transport, utility, reconnaissance and other operational missions.

Sarang’s routines demonstrate characteristics that are particularly relevant to rotary-wing performance, including manoeuvrability, responsiveness and formation handling.

While an aerobatic demonstration is not equivalent to an operational or procurement evaluation, repeated appearances at major international airshows provide an important opportunity to demonstrate the maturity of an Indian-designed aviation platform before a global audience.

Part of Growing India-Egypt Defence Engagement

The deployment also takes place against the backdrop of steadily expanding India-Egypt defence cooperation.

The two countries conduct military exchanges and exercises across several services. The fourth edition of the India-Egypt Special Forces exercise Cyclone was held in Cairo in April 2026, while Indian forces also participated in Egypt’s multinational Bright Star 2025 exercise with more than 700 personnel, forming India’s largest foreign contingent at that edition.

Air-force interaction has similarly expanded through professional exchanges, training activities and participation in Egyptian aviation events.

Sarang’s return to El Alamein therefore combines several objectives: strengthening military-to-military engagement with Egypt, representing the Indian Air Force at a prominent international event and showcasing an indigenous Indian aerospace platform.

When the five Dhruvs take to the skies over El Alamein from 8–10 September, they will serve not only as an aerobatic display team but also as a highly visible demonstration of India’s growing indigenous helicopter and aerospace capabilities.
