Renault Begins Export of Made-in-India Duster to South Africa, Strengthening India’s Role in Global Auto Supply

The export batch includes the India-spec version of the Duster, which carries several design differences compared with the global model. These include Duster lettering on the front grille, revised headlamps, updated tail-lamps and different alloy wheels. A limited-run Iconic Launch Edition, featuring special exterior and interior design touches, is also part of the initial shipment.

Renault has started exporting the India-made Duster to South Africa, marking an important step in the company’s renewed strategy for the midsize SUV. The first shipment includes 750 units of the new-generation Duster, produced in India and dispatched for the South African market.

A limited-run Iconic Launch Edition, featuring special exterior and interior design touches, is also part of the initial shipment.

The new Duster’s export journey begins with South Africa, but Renault plans to gradually expand shipments to more international markets in the coming months. The move underlines India’s growing importance as a manufacturing and export hub for the French carmaker.

Renault Group India CEO Stéphane Deblaise said the start of Duster exports reflects the strategic role India is expected to play in the company’s global growth plans. Renault is working towards generating annual export revenues of around GBP 2 billion, or nearly ₹25,000 crore, from India by 2030.

India has already become an important production base for Renault’s compact and entry-level models. The company began its export operations from India in 2012 with the earlier-generation Duster. It later expanded its export portfolio with the Kwid in 2016, the Triber in 2019 and the Kiger in 2021.

At present, Renault exports India-made vehicles to 14 countries across regions such as SAARC, the Indian Ocean, Asia Pacific, South Africa and East Africa. The addition of the new Duster is expected to strengthen this export network further.

The Duster has a special place in Renault’s India journey. First launched in India in 2012, it helped create strong demand for midsize SUVs and became one of the brand’s most recognised models. The SUV was discontinued in 2022, but Renault has now brought it back in a new-generation form as part of its larger product revival plan.

The start of exports also highlights the increasing global relevance of India’s automobile manufacturing ecosystem. With competitive production capabilities, improving quality standards and strong supplier networks, India is becoming a preferred base for automakers looking to serve both domestic and overseas markets.

The made-in-India represents the company’s intent to use India as a strategic platform for global operations, product localisation and international market expansion. As shipments move beyond South Africa, the new Duster could become an important contributor to Renault’s export growth from India.
