Chhattisgarh has recorded an important mineral discovery after five diamonds, including two gem-quality stones, were recovered during scientific exploration at the Baloda-Belmundi Diamond Block in Mahasamund district. The discovery has raised hopes that the area could emerge as a new diamond-bearing region in the state.
The diamonds were found in the Saraipali area of Mahasamund during exploration being carried out by NMDC-CMDC Limited, a joint venture between National Mineral Development Corporation and Chhattisgarh Mineral Development Corporation. Officials said the recovery confirms the presence of diamond minerals in the block and provides a strong basis for further geological investigation.
A total of five diamonds weighing 1.22 carats were recovered after processing 200 tonnes of bulk sample material collected from the exploration site. Among them, two whitish diamonds have been classified as gem quality, weighing 0.19 carats and 0.06 carats. The remaining three stones include one yellowish non-gem diamond weighing 0.32 carats and two brownish non-gem diamonds weighing 0.59 carats and 0.06 carats.
Mining experts have described the recovery of gem-quality diamonds at an early exploration stage as an encouraging sign. Such findings indicate that the area may hold larger diamond-bearing potential, though more detailed exploration will be needed to assess the actual scale and commercial viability of the resource.
The Baloda-Belmundi area was earlier identified as a prospective diamond zone through stream sediment sampling, geophysical studies and around 500 metres of exploratory drilling. Based on these findings, the bulk sample material was sent to NMDC’s diamond processing facility in Panna, Madhya Pradesh, where it was processed and examined.
Since NMDC-CMDC does not currently have a dedicated facility for secure diamond storage, all five recovered stones have been deposited in NMDC’s strong room in Panna. This ensures safe custody while further studies and official procedures continue.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai described the discovery as a significant achievement for the state. He said it marks an important step in the scientific exploration and utilisation of Chhattisgarh’s natural resources. The state is already known for its rich mineral base, including iron ore, coal, bauxite and limestone. The confirmation of diamond potential could add a new dimension to its mineral economy.
The state government is also focusing on value addition, mineral-based industries and local employment generation. If future exploration confirms commercially viable diamond deposits, the Mahasamund project could attract investment, create jobs and generate additional revenue for Chhattisgarh.
The discovery is also important from a national perspective. India is the world’s largest diamond cutting and polishing hub, but the country depends heavily on imported rough diamonds. Domestic discoveries such as this could help strengthen India’s raw material base and support the gems and jewellery sector over the long term.
Officials said the latest recovery will guide the next phase of exploration in the region. Further geological studies, sampling and drilling will be required to determine whether the area can support commercial mining.
Diamonds have also been reported in the Mainpur area of Gariaband district, which neighbours Mahasamund. The new finding at Baloda-Belmundi strengthens the possibility that parts of this region may hold wider diamond-bearing geological formations.
The discovery of gem-quality diamonds in Mahasamund is still at an early stage, but it represents a promising development for Chhattisgarh’s mining sector. With scientific exploration, secure resource assessment and responsible development, the state could move closer to becoming an important contributor to India’s diamond resource map.
