‘Namami Gange’ Lifts 128-Year Old ‘Curse’ On Holy River

Discharge From Asia’s Largest Sisamau Drain Comes To A Stop.

In what is being hailed as the biggest victory yet for the ‘Namami Gange’ project to clean up the Ganga, 14 crore litres of sewage which used to be released into the river from the Sisamau drain every day is now being successfully diverted to the Jajmau treatment plant, reports Live Hindustan.

Sewage from the drain, which is reportedly 128 years old, used to be dumped into the river through the Bhairo Ghat. While 8 crore litres of the sewage had been successfully routed earlier, routing the remaining 6 crore litres proved to be an arduous task. However, this has now been achieved by Uttar Pradesh’s Jal Nigam and Namami Gange engineers.

The report states that engineers and their pumping machines were stretched to their limits in trying to control the flow of the sewage due to the velocity of the drain. The entire effort had been made more difficult due to an existing pipeline and a British-era drain obstructing the way.

Cleaning up the Ganga has been among Narendra Modi government’s top-most priorities with the ‘Namami Gange’ project having been launched for this specific purpose. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had earlier announced that the project will be finished by December 2019.

ഗംഗ നദിയെ വൃത്തിയാക്കാനായി ‘നാമമി ഗംഗാ’ പദ്ധതി വിജയത്തിലേക്ക്. എല്ലാ ദിവസവും സോസാമു കനാലിൽ നിന്ന് ഗംഗയിലേക്കു ഒഴുകിയെത്തുന്ന 14 കോടി ലിറ്റർ മലിനജലം ഇപ്പോൾ പൂർണമായും ജജ്മുവിലെ മാലിന്യ ജല ശുദ്ധീകരണ പ്ലാന്റിലേക്കു തിരിച്ചു വിടുവാൻ സാധിക്കുന്നു.

128 വർഷം പഴക്കമുള്ള അഴുക്കുചാലിൽ നിന്നും വരുന്ന മലിനജലം ഭൈറോ ഘട്ടിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഗംഗയിലേക്കു പ്രവേശിക്കാര്. 8 കോടി ലിറ്റർ മലിനജലം കുറച്ചു സമയത്തിനുമുന്പ് വിജയകരമായി ട്രീത്മെന്റ്റ് പ്ലാന്റിലേക്കു തിരിച്ചുവിടാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു, ബാക്കി വരുന്ന 6 കോടി ലിറ്റർ മലിനജലത്തിന്ടെ ഒഴുക്ക് തിരിച്ചു വിട്ടു ശുദ്ധീകരിക്കാൻ ഏറെ പ്രയാസപ്പെണ്ടി വന്നു; എന്നിരുന്നാലും ഇപ്പോൾ ഉത്തർപ്രദേശിലെ ജൽ നിഗം, നാമമി ഗാംഗ എൻജിനീയർമാർക്ക് ഇത് വിജയകരം ആയി പൂർത്തീകരിക്കാൻ സാധിച്ചു.

മലിനജലത്തിന്ടെ ഒഴുക്കിനെ നിയന്ത്രിക്കാൻ, എൻജിനീയർമാരും അവരുടെ പമ്പിങ് യന്ത്രങ്ങളും അവയുടെ പരിധിക്കപ്പുറം പ്രവർത്തിക്കേണ്ടി വന്നതായി റിപ്പോർട്ട് പറയുന്നു. നിലവിലുള്ള പൈപ്പ് ലൈനുകളും , ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് കാലത്തു നിർമിച്ച അഴുക്കു ചാലുകളും, ഒഴുക്കിനെ നിയന്ത്രിക്കാൻ ഉള്ള ശ്രമത്തെ കൂടുതൽ ദുഷ്കരം ആക്കി.
ഗംഗ നദിയെ വൃത്തിയാക്കുക എന്ന ശ്രമകരം ആയ പദ്ധതി മോഡി സര്ക്കാരിന്റെ പ്രധാന പദ്ധതികളിൽ ഒന്നാണ്. ഇതിനു വേണ്ടി ആണ് “നമാമി ഗംഗേ ” എന്ന പദ്ധതിക്ക് രൂപം നൽകിയത് . 2019 ഡിസംബറിൽ പദ്ധതി പൂർത്തിയാകുമെന്ന് കേന്ദ്രമന്ത്രി നിതിൻ ഗഡ്കരി നേരത്തെ അറിയിച്ചിരുന്നു.
