NEW DELHI: The Centre will come up with a portal to help students verify the genuineness of foreign higher educational institutions before they join such institutes, government sources said.
Officials said the external affairs ministry shared about this initiative during the PRAGATI meeting chaired by PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday. Sources said the PM flagged the ordeal that several students face after joining foreign institutes due to misinformation about them and sought some solution to the problem. This came up when Modi was reviewing complaints of problems faced by Indians living abroad. The modalities of the IT interface that can work as a guide would be decided soon, TOI has learnt.
Chairing the web-based interaction with Union secretaries and chief secretaries from states, PM suggested states to identify 10% of the most backward blocks and track their 49 performance indicators as it is being done in the case of aspirational (backward) districts by Niti Aayog.
Officials said Modi suggested that states can create a framework to have competition among backward blocks and share successstories. The PM went through the details of some of the 20 best performing districts and the worst 10 which are being monitored.
According to Niti Aayog, Balarpur and Shrawasti in UP have topped the list and others include Waynard in Kerala, Nuapada in Odisha, Ranchi and Banka. The bottom 10 include Malkangiri in Odisha, Gumla in Jharkhand and Dhurbi in Assam.
The PM also asked the road transport and agriculture ministries to work together on a new start-up model of logistics support, particularly with regard to transfer of agricultural products from one state to another. “He said all the states must come together and use a common, integrated platform for smooth operation,” an official release said.
