Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, along with Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, has launched the ₹189.79 crore Mizoram Ginger Mission, a major value-chain development initiative aimed at transforming ginger cultivation in the state into a stronger farmer-led, processing-driven and export-oriented economy. The Mission focuses on ginger cultivation, processing, branding, packaging and market integration for Mizoram’s high-value ginger sector.
Anchored by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, the Mission will be implemented through a convergence model involving multiple ministries and institutions. It brings together schemes and support from the Ministries of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Rural Development, and Food Processing Industries, along with NABARD, ICAR, APEDA, the Mizoram government and private investors. The objective is to create a structured ecosystem that connects farmers directly with processing, value addition and premium markets.
The initiative is particularly important because Mizoram is known for its GI-certified ginger cultivars, which have strong potential in pharma-grade and premium global markets. According to the PIB release, Mizo ginger contains 6 to 8 percent oleoresin, compared with the global average of around 3 percent. Despite this quality advantage, farmers currently receive only around ₹8 to ₹15 per kilogram, while the value chain can reach more than ₹500 per kilogram in international markets.
The Mission has been designed to bridge this gap between farm-gate prices and final market value. It seeks to reduce post-harvest losses, ensure better utilisation of Mizoram’s GI-certified ginger varieties, and create direct economic benefits for farming households. The government has positioned the programme not merely as a cultivation scheme, but as a complete value-chain intervention that can help farmers move from raw produce sales to processed and branded products.
Scindia described the initiative as the “Mizo Ginger Movement” and said it rests on four strategic pillars: convergence, value addition, branding and market integration. The broader aim is to “disintermediate the intermediary” by strengthening cooperatives and Farmer Producer Organisations, so that cultivators can capture a larger share of the value generated from Mizoram’s premium ginger.
The Mission will create one integrated processing hub and three spoke centres. It will also include more than 30 strategic interventions and is expected to integrate nearly 20,000 farming households into a unified value-chain ecosystem. The model will focus on traceability, quality assurance, distinctiveness and farmer-led value creation, allowing Mizo ginger to be positioned as a premium product in domestic and global markets.
The government has also outlined a clear export vision for the crop. The Mission will target market entry into South-East Asia, the Middle East and Europe. The long-term goal is to make Mizo ginger available on global shelves as a traceable premium product linked directly to individual farmers and local production clusters.
The programme also fits into the wider “Brand North East” vision, under which each North Eastern state is being associated with a unique economic strength. The PIB release referred to examples such as Sikkim as an organic state, Arunachal Pradesh’s kiwi, Tripura’s queen pineapple, Nagaland’s coffee and Meghalaya’s Lakadong turmeric. Mizoram’s ginger is now being positioned in the same premium regional branding framework.
For Mizoram’s farmers, the Mission could become a turning point if implemented effectively. By linking cultivation with processing, branding, export markets and industry partnerships, the ₹189.79 crore initiative aims to deliver higher income, reduce wastage, create sustainable rural livelihoods and build a stronger agro-processing ecosystem in the North East. The government expects the Mission to eventually support a six-fold increase in farmer value realisation while giving Mizo ginger a stronger identity in premium global markets.
