Exercise

What is YOUR story for not taking care of your body? What is YOUR reason for putting your body through suffering? Earnings of loved ones and ours will be drained if physical health is not respected. Yes, there are accidents and unexpected events, but there are also factors which can be controlled. We all have reasons why we are sick. We just have to tell ourselves the reason why should we be healthy.

Education is not transferring information of particular subject into the brain. Education is learning how to solve problems of self, family, and society by acquiring knowledge.”-Dr. A

All of us have information. We, however, lack the drive to initiate action from the available information.
What is the reason for our failure to be physically fit? What is YOUR story for “not being able to achieve your physical goal?”

I will be discussing a sensitive topic. I will be talking about being overweight. I will be talking about lack of physical exercise.

I am not body shaming or fat shaming here. There are hormonal reasons for being overweight. There are doctors and therapists who have poor health and unhealthy habits. I myself have been battling unhealthy eating habits for many years, I have been overweight and have got healthier since last year. I have often felt offended when other people called me “fat.” But my turning point occurred when I was watching “Animal Planet.” The show was on polar bears. The host mentioned how polar bears voraciously eat just before winters, and their body weight almost doubles just before hibernation. The body produces and stores fat because through winters the animal cannot get much food. I instinctively looked at my body. My body was storing fat because I was over feeding it. I had to hibernate or simply stop feeding myself. Right about this time, I heard a talk on medical advancements. It was regarding the average life span steadily increasing across global populations. Those of us who are about 25-40 are projected to have life span of 80-100. This fact hit me hard. My grandmother had a cardiac stent intervention at her age of 87. I was going to live long, and I had to take care of myself.

Science can increase the quantity of life. I am responsible for quality of my life.

Our body stores every bit of excess glucose as fat. The human body conserves every bit of excess nutrition for the future. Having evolved through times of drought and famine, the body has no way of knowing about globalization. Globalization and mass transportation have ensured three meals and multiple snacks during our normal day. This is over feeding for evolving humans who have not had this privilege for 2.5 Million years. Being overweight is just a consequence.

Hunting and self preservation ensured that humans engaged in regular sprinting or high-intensity exercise. Till about 200 years ago, the human tendency to attack one another ensured that we all got our regular exercise. This recent 200 years of civil, sedentary life is not enough for genetic mutation to eliminate exercise from our routine.

Exercise need not be for a long duration. Look up “High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT).” This is something similar to sprinting when we have to protect ourselves or hunt. Even the elderly can engage in this form under supervision. Those who have NOT crossed 50, you have no excuse. Lace yourself up for exercise. And of course cut your carbohydrate intake. Just tell yourself your reason to be healthy. My reason is, “I am going to live a long life; and I love myself!”
