Yoga Mahotsav–2026 Begins 100-Day Countdown to International Day of Yoga

The Government of India has officially launched the 100-day countdown to the International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026 with the inauguration of Yoga Mahotsav–2026 in New Delhi. The event was inaugurated by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav, marking the beginning of preparations for the 12th edition of the global yoga celebration.

On the occasion, the Minister unveiled “10 Yoga Protocols for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and Target Groups,” a comprehensive initiative designed to support individuals across various age groups and health conditions through structured yogic practices.

Organised by the Ministry of Ayush, the event highlighted the remarkable journey of the International Day of Yoga, which has evolved into a worldwide movement promoting health, harmony, and well-being. Since its inception, the ministry has successfully coordinated eleven editions of IDY with steadily expanding global participation.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Jadhav noted that under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the International Day of Yoga has grown into a global celebration of wellness.

He emphasised that yoga is far more than a physical routine. According to him, it is a powerful discipline that cultivates mental clarity, physical vitality, and emotional balance, helping individuals build resilience in challenging times, including during the global pandemic.

New Yoga Protocols for Health and Well-being

The newly launched protocols aim to address the growing burden of non-communicable diseases by encouraging people to take proactive responsibility for their health. Designed for individuals at different stages of life, these guidelines integrate simple yogic practices that can strengthen physical and mental resilience while improving overall quality of life.

The Minister also recalled a recent post-budget webinar where Prime Minister Modi highlighted India’s commitment to preventive and holistic healthcare, identifying yoga and Ayurveda as essential pillars of the country’s health philosophy.

“Yoga for Air Travel” Initiative

Among the key highlights of the event was the launch of a specialised “Yoga for Air Travel” protocol. This brief five-minute routine includes seated yogic practices, breathing exercises, and short meditation techniques aimed at reducing travel-related stress.

Developed by yoga experts, the protocol is designed to improve blood circulation, reduce muscular discomfort, and promote mental calmness during long flights.

Yoga 365 Campaign and Digital Initiatives

As part of the preparations for IDY 2026, the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the wellness platform Habuild to launch the Yoga 365 campaign.

This initiative will provide free daily online yoga sessions, encouraging people to make yoga a consistent part of their daily routine throughout the year.

Explaining the campaign, Minister Jadhav said the initiative aims to cultivate the habit of regular yoga practice while building enthusiasm in the run-up to the International Day of Yoga 2026.

During the programme, Saurabh Bothra, founder of Habuild, also announced a toll-free number (1800-315-7008) to facilitate registration for the Yoga 365 programme.

Technology Meets Tradition

Highlighting the role of technology in expanding access to yoga, Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush, spoke about several digital initiatives introduced by the ministry.

Through the Ayush Grid, the ministry has developed an AI-based posture correction tool that helps practitioners refine their yogasana techniques in real time.

Kotecha also noted the growing global popularity of yoga. According to him, participation in the 2025 International Day of Yoga exceeded 26 crore people worldwide, reflecting the increasing global embrace of the practice.

To further expand accessibility, the ministry has also made the Advanced Y-Break course available on the Karmayogi Bharat platform, where more than one million participants have already enrolled.

Yoga for Modern Lifestyle Challenges

Speaking at the event, H. R. Nagendra, President of the S-VYASA Society, emphasised the growing importance of yoga in addressing lifestyle disorders and non-communicable diseases.

He observed that yoga has proven to be an effective preventive as well as therapeutic practice and should therefore be integrated more deeply into society and public health systems.

Welcoming the dignitaries, Monalisa Dash, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Ayush, described yoga as one of India’s most profound gifts to the world—a holistic philosophy that harmonises the mind, body, and spirit.

Demonstrations and Technical Sessions

The day began with a live demonstration of the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) at the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, attended by more than 1,000 yoga enthusiasts. The session featured a sequence of yogasanas, pranayama, and meditation practices designed to enhance flexibility, strength, balance, and inner harmony.

The one-day Yoga Mahotsav also featured three thematic technical sessions focusing on:

  • Yoga for the geriatric population
  • Business models for yoga entrepreneurship
  • The intersection of yoga and artificial intelligence

These sessions brought together leading experts from yoga, medicine, and scientific research, creating a valuable platform for knowledge exchange and highlighting the scientific and therapeutic potential of yoga.

Approximately 1,500 participants, including yoga masters, scholars, policymakers, bureaucrats, corporate professionals, and practitioners from allied sciences, attended the event.
