A proud moment for Indian across the world as India’s Tricolor takes over Mt Vinson; becomes first country to display gigantic INDIAN FLAG MEASURING 7500 SUARE FEET in Antarctica.
On November 27, the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) successfully displayed a 7500 square feet Indian National flag at Mt. Vinson Base, Antarctica under minus 25-degree temperature.
The multi aimed expedition named “Mission Antarctica 2021” -aimed at promoting patriotism through adventure, among the youth and the countrymen. On 17 Aug 2021, Sh. Rajnath Singh ,Hon’ble Defense Minister of Indian approved HMI proposal to display the Gigantic Indian Flag PAN India and on White Continent “Antarctica”. Accordingly with in depth planning, amidst the Covid Situation the three membered team Led by Gp Capt Jai Kishan comprises of Nk Subedar Mahendra Yadav and Sh. Sumendu arrived at Union Glacier Antarctica (gate way to Antarctica) on 26 Nov 2021.
The team moved and set the Base Camp of Mt. Vinson ( Highest Peak of Antarctica continent) on 26 Nov 2021 and undertook various mission over white continent.
On 27 Nov 2021, the team without any resting period Displayed the National flag measuring 7500 sft at Mt. Vinson Base Camp in attendance of various foreigner climbers. Making India first country in the World to Display such a gigantic flag over white continent.
On 28 Nov 2021, Team moved to low camp with an aim to set higher camp and climb Mt. Vinson between 30 Nov to 04 Dec 2021. However, considering polar storm conditions from 30 Nov onwards, the team moved to high camp on 29 Nov and hoisted the Indian flag atop highest peak of Antarctica on 30 Nov 2021at 1900 hrs local time.
On 30 Nov to 03 Dec 2021, from 0100 hrs the team trapped in polar storm at Higher camp and survived the storm as per contingency plan. The team was instrumental in rescue of two German climbers and getting them down to safety height at Vinson base camp.
On 04 Dec 2021,the team performed 125 sequence of Suryanamaskar beside doing Vinyasa yoga flow at Mt. Vinson Base Camp .
On 06 Dec 2021, the team displayed the 7500 sft National Flag at Union Glacier. A Russian Team took the drone shots and footage.
On 07 Dec 2021, the team undertook MTB ( Cycle Rally ) at Union Glacier.
On 07 Dec 2021, the team moved to Chile and after review of expedition , on 12 Dec 2021 undertook skydiving Jump over Andes Mountain region , Santiago ( Chile) from 13500 feet and displayed the 75 years Logo Flag in air while jumper falling at the speed of 200 miles / hour.
On 13 Dec 2021, the team was received by Indian Embassy ion Santiago, Chile . The team gave a brief presentation about the expedition and its achievements.
This is not the first occasion such a giant flag has been displayed by the Institute. Prior to this, a team HMI led by Gp Capt Jai Kishan had displayed the same 7500 Sq feet Indian flag atop Mt Rhenock Sikkim Himalaya on 25 Apr 2021 and set new records in the Asian Book of Records and the Indian Book of Records.
Mt Vinson Mount Vinson is the highest mountain in Antarctica and is 16,050 feet above sea level. One of the most recently discovered summits, Mount Vinson is part of the Sentinel Range of the Ellsworth Mountains, near the Ronne Ice Shelf. It was first scaled in December 1966 and in January 1967. Temperatures in the Ellsworth Mountains average around -30 °C.
The expedition was supported and coordinated by Ministry of Defence , YSD W Bengal and MoYAS with special messages under the banner of Azadi Kaa Amrit Mahotsav.
